Yanks Draft Day 3 Wrap Up

So on day 3, the Yanks wound up  sort of an unusual Yankee draft by taking: 19 pitchers and 11 more bats. Of those pitchers 14 were righty and 5 were lefty.  7 were preps and 12 were collegiate arms.

In fact, let's stay on the pitchers here for a minute.  Not only were 7 of the pitchers preps, and will thus have signability issues, but one more was a JuCo.  So that's 8 pitchers who are going to have signability questions, and that's leaving out the number non senior pitchers they drafted who might want more than 100K.

Now let's look at the bats.   Of the 11 hitters they took on day 3, 4 were preps, one was a JuCo, and 1 had no school at all.  So that's 5 more that could have signability questions and one who should be grateful for whatever they've got.

I said earlier today, or last night that the Yanks usually sign 30 or so of their 40 picks, but it might not be the case this year, since they took so many preps.  Seeing the success they've been having with JuCo's lately, I was sort of expecting them go deeper into that market.  Of course, I can't make prospects exist just for the purposes of my hoped for market exploitation, and it didn't seem to be quite the market it was as recently as last year.

In any event, I'm hoping the Yanks realize enough savings from picks 2 and Day 2 to lock up more Preps/JuCo's than just Rutherford and Martinez (who says btw, he's signing -- so that number must now be a fixture in the formula).  My guess is they did save more than enough, to afford a few more packages, perhaps enough for a prep hitter or two (maybe and OF and C) and enough for one or two of the prep arms, and probably the JuCo.  And those will go to whomever agrees to them first.

Interestingly, under these crazy new rules, the Yanks have been better at maximizing what they've been allowed, than they ever were (except maybe in 2006) about maximizing their advantage when there were no crazy rules.

I'll have more to say about the overall draft over the next few days.   Like everyone else, I'm still digesting it, and still figuring out who everyone is.  The Yanks sure did go off the national radar a few times on Day 3, which can absolutely be a good thing, at times.

The idiot was going to PH sucky Hicks for Refs. This team is run so poorly.

I'm glad Nick Goody seems to be sticking around. Could end up being valuable middle relief if they keep letting him get regular work given his strikeout totals in the minors.

I've been expecting him to get traction for a few years now. He was being compared heavily to DRob when we drafted him. Not sure he lets things roll off his back as easily as DRob did.
