This Week on the Blog
This past week saw the Rangers seemingly wake up, Zinger showing he ain't dead yet, the Giants sit on their hands, and the Yanks continue their maddening handling of young talent. Let's hope this week is better.
Rangers: Suddenly Kreider, Stepan and Miller are playing like we always hoped they would. What's more, Nash is starting to score, and Yandle continues to be more productive than his usage pattern should allow. AV has been terrible at mixing in mid-season "upgrades" and Staal is now in the same boat that Yandle's been in for over a year. I can't believe Gorton hasn't just taken Glass away from AV, but he hasn't and that's on him. They're magic number for the playoffs is down to 6, and they certainly are capable of a run. Klein and McDonagh are a much better top pair than Girardi and McD were. Now the just have to work McIlrath in for Boyle.
Knicks: This year is a wash, but they really do have to get a better coach over the summer, as well as start, immediately, building around Kristaps. That's about it.
Yanks: Today, the Yanks sent down Refsnyder. There's just something wrong there, and it's not based on production. Also, they want to use Bryan Mitchell as a swing man, because the rotation is determined by paychecks and not by merit. Mitchell has had a great Spring and really looks like the stud he's always hinted at becoming. It's a shame that he doesn't have a big enough contract and isn't old enough to get chance after chance. Let's hope he doesn't hurt his arm as they screw around.
Giants: The Giants made a huge splash on the first day of UFA, but have sat on thir hands since. They still have big needs on the OL, at WR, at FS, and possibly at most other spots. Not sure what they are waiting for, since all of the FA RT's that would be top 5, are gone. They really should solve one or two other spots before the draft, and I wouldn't mind at all if they hit the trade market. They say Mo Wikerson is on the market. Maybe JPP and a pick? They still have a lot to do personnel wise before they can start the season.
Anyway, here's hoping we all get some great news this week. Rock on.

These aren't the golden years of New York sports, that's for sure.
I get its all cyclical anyway, but have the teams ever all sucked at once?
Parts of the `70s.
BA says the Yanks, even under penalty last year and this signed 57 IFA's in 2015. That's good as many of their top prospects have come from those lower dollar signings like Severino and Mateo.
For those critical of move, sounds like Yankees really want RR on roster, working on getting him there. https://twitter.com/lohudyankees/status/714186922302816256
Let Refsnyder get his reps at 3B in SWB and maybe he will be ready as a complete player if they need him.
Here is the problem with that. Two days of good or bad play should not change their plans (they don't with terrible vets) but with Refs they did.
It apears that they are looking at the dollars saved the wrong way. It's good to have young players on the ML team making the min. It's bad to have bad vets on the ML teams making crazy money and even worse when you patch that with more overpays as they did last year.
Heyman: jesus montero has been placed on waivers by the mariners
Waiving Jesus on Easter is curious, but the Yankees should claim him for sure.
Heh
Jays reclaim Jesus.
Writers like King just regurgitate the company bullshit. I mean, at least he mentioned the name as someone who should be in contention, but when you have their fragile rotation and you pretend that really like that arm in the pen? That's laughable.
If anyone is a challenge to Sabathia, whose last outing was the best of his spring, it’s likely Bryan Mitchell, who has been the Yankees’ best pitcher under the palm trees. However, the Yankees like the right-hander in the swingman role previously held by Adam Warren. Nova, coming off two disappointing outings, starts Wednesday against the Braves.
I don't understand how King keeps his job. He is so full of it, always speculating that the Yanks will overpay for some mediocre veteran, and has never offered any decent insights for years and years. I'm not crazy about Madden and I think Lupica is a blowhard, but you'd think the Post would have someone good covering the Yanks, especially against Feinsand.
And touche LINJ for "Jays reclaim Jesus"! I'm not sure I'd have favored offering him more than a minor league contract as an opportunity to straighten himself out.
I heard a bit of Cashman on WFAN. In response to why the Yankees didn't pickup Montero, he said they don't have a need and that Toronto is more offensively focused.
That's my problem with him and Girardi in a nutshell, and it is on them because it's hard to believe Levine or Hal give a crap about offensive or pitching-centric roster construction as long as they make money.
They have been called the freakin' Bronx Bombers for a reason and it has worked pretty well for almost 100 years.
This btw, the has nothing to do with Montero per se. It's about what I believe is a flawed philosophy.
And it's not like they have done what Alderson has done and can point to that as a defense of that way of doing things.
KC has good enough pitching and an offensive like the dynasty teams: patience, plate coverage, AVG, SLG etc.
I guess Cashman and Girardi were asleep then.
I guess they could have stashed Montero in SWB as a DH/1B.
I listened to the interview and took that comment as moreso meaning they have a lot of big bats to glean off of, and the Rogers' Center is such a hitter's park, that it might be a good situation for him to possible rediscover himself.
Bob, that's why I wanted the Yankees to sign him. With a Teix injury all but inevitable, they need a backup 1B.
Isn't YS great for RH hitters who can go the other way???
Jennings says they like César Puello. I had never heard of him, so I googled and found that he had a biogensis suspension. So why do they keep pretending that PEDs are anything other than a substance a lot of players use, probably still use, and legalize or supervise the whole thing.
Apparently Andrew Miller just took a linedrive off his wrist and had to leave the game.
So the domestic violence charges against Reyes are being dropped because his wife won't cooperate despite significant bruises sustained at the time of the complaint.
This is why it's tough, if not impossible, to separate false charges v. someone who is truly battered but lacks the courage to see a case through the legal system.

The Mitchell news couldn't be worse
Such tough news for the kid. He looked like he has finally put it all together. I guess Cessa goes into his role.
What a shame. Let's hope he's OK when he comes back, and perhaps there will be an open starting position at that time.
At the same time, he could be very valuable as a flexible long reliever. I see long relief as much more than playing garbageman; if the team is down several runs in the early going, good long relief gives you a chance to come back and in extra innings a good long reliever saves the rest of your pen. For the life of me I can't understand using a succession of one-inning guys in a 15 inning game and then wondering where your bullpen went the next day.
The real negative, as I see it, apart from the personal impact on him, is that it makes it more likely that a short-sighted trade will be made for yet another pitcher, even though the offense could be very vulnerable if Teix and A-Rod don't have similar short season production as last year.
We sometimes for get that Cashman was publicly willing to "rock and roll" for marginal starters like Hammel (not Cole), Dempster, and Jeff S...zja...
If there is true indecision, it's sort of interesting that they haven't announced the CC/Nova winner for the spot in the rotation most likely to be skipped when the schedule is sparse.
I doubt they can afford to trade Nova with Mitchell DL'd (w/o getting a starter back), and all things being equal, it's reasonable to think that CC's contract and past service gives him a big, big, big leg up.
But who knows?
Saw this tidbit today about the Giants and figured I'd share.
"The players they drafted since Jerry Reese became general manager in 2007 combined to make 164 starts throughout the NFL last season. That was 18 fewer than any other team's picks and 95 fewer than the league average. "
Yet somehow he wasn't fired.
A coupl of factors. During that period they picked last twice, they have been the most injured team in football for the last three consecutive years, and they'd have an inordinate number of draft picks that had to retire early, and one never play at all, because of injuries.
Because of those factors and because he was in charge of the draft before he was GM, they're giving him another year.
Whatever luck worked against him, the fact that Eli somehow stayed upright despite Reese's failure to proactively rebuild the OL as it foreseeably declined (and as a result having to rely exclusively on very high picks to belatedly begin to rebuild it) sort of mitigates in the other direction.
I will attribute Pineda's bad start today to a dead arm. It had to come and now's a good time.
And really, it took veterans going to Rambis in order for him to say he's going to play youth? Is he the dumbest fuck on the planet?
Cave waived.
Apparently Andrew Miller is gonna play through the injury.
Rambis has been a disaster. And frankly, having known him a bit a long time ago, I've been surprised.
So, Cave is coming back and adding to our glut of upper level OF's.
The hand specialist confirmed that Miller can do what he wants to do.
