This Week on the Blog
This past week saw the Knicks rise up a bit, the Rangers maybe play a little better, the Giants part ways with a beloved coach, and the Yanks make small minor league type moves. Let's hope this week is better.
The Giants: The Giants are front and center right now because they need a new coach. So far they'd interviewed their coordinators, as well as Andew Gase, who has since taken the Miami job, Teryl Austin and Doug Marrone. In the next hour or so, Bill O'Brien could become available or available-ish, and that could interest them. I thought when John Mara said he wouldn't rule out trading for a coach, he wasn't just talking about Payton. They do not seem to have reached into collegiate ranks, as Mara said they would during their hamfisted press event earlier in the week.
The Yankees: The Yanks sent cash considerations to Cleveland for yet another reliever, Kirby Yates. He had a high era, and takes up a space on the roster, which now stands at 38. Seems like the default setting for the Yanks is "acquire a reliever." At least this one only cost cash. They still seem to want another starter.
Knicks: Carmelo has morphed into more of facilitator lately, and it seems to be helping the Knicks. I've insistet that this year doesn't matter, but if they can somehow cobble together a trade for a third part while in season, a playoff run might be fun. We'll see. But going forward, building around Porzingis remains the way to go, as he showed again last night. Interestingly, Calderon, last night's final miss nothwithstanding, might once again be tradable. And certainly all of those FA deals they gave out last summer are movable.
Rangers: Egads, they must do something about the Girardi situation. He absolutely handed a goal to Ovechkin to end the first period today. It was a game they probably would have won within regulation but for the Girardi asssist. Instead they lost in OT, and thus are on a modest point streak intead of a modest win streak. Sheesh. They need to be better all around, though Hayes did score a goal. I sense more deals on the way.
So that about sets the table. Hopefuly by week's end the Giants will have hired a coach and that coach will be hiring a good staff. Otherwise, let's hope the rest of them play better, if they're playing, and that none of them do anything stupid.
Hope you have a great week.

Crazy mofo game.
Knicks: I doubt they have the assets to get a #3 right now. Sports writers are already calling for us to improve the Guard situation, not sure who we'd trade to get a better player. If we do that, we'd likely hamper the future growth(more draft picks traded). I want a championship team built, not a # 7-8 seed for the next 5. We should be looking to purge Calderon, as you stated. Hopefully we can recoup some draft picks.
"I’m told Giants are searching for a proven head coach which right now in this climate of candidates really limits their options." @RapSheet
Hue Jackson coming in per Raanan.
The Bengals could do worse than hiring Coughlin.
Jackson may be going to the Ninets.
OT, but if you guys want to see how one poster has effectively ruined an entire forum, go over to NYYFans and witness how WINStheonlystat (an obvious parody to the WIN METHOD account from way back in the day) has infected every Yankee discussion. It's an obvious troll account, yet the mods refuse to do anything about him/her for some reason. Really quite admirable from a trolling perspective.
Oh god, Mike Smith came in for an interview..please no.
I don't think I posted there since like 2008.
Anyway, Barry, once Bronx by the Bay, was good at that stuff. It could be him.
As for the Giants, given the names floated, McAdoo is becoming the most appealing of a weak group, but if the reports/rumors are correct, it seems that Mara may be following s model that he thinks worked with the Couglin hire, but I think it's really yet another example of wrong-headed thinking by him.
Rex and Rob united. #nepotism
Per @SandoESPN , NYG draft picks since '07 (Reese's first) played 10,767 snaps in '15 - fewest of any team. NFL avg was 16,448.
Giants submitted their request to interview Hue Jackson Sunday....he seems to check a few boxes their looking for.
At this point, it is becoming more about who I don't want more than who I do.
But with Reese still as GM, it would take a Saban/Shaw type to excite me.
So Cashman said that Castro is the BU 3B. Neither Refs nor Ackley will work there. If Headley continues to suck I hope they find the courage to put Refs at 2B and Castro at 3B.
Niners will talk to Coughlin. I wonder if anyone would want to speak to Reese if Mara wasn't delusional
HueJ may interview with them in Houston.
Not many good options for the BU3B spot. I hope Headley rebounds so they can trade him next offseason.
I think Refs could be OK as a backup, as distinct from a regular. Of course if Castro can play the position and Refs fills in at second, that would work as well.
If there is an optimistic take on Chapman, personal issues aside, it's that they will have to find a way to keep him, and that means trading Miller before Chapman becomes a free agent, Because he could be a must sign
He was a must-sign as an IFA. As it stands, I'll take the picks if it means Miller and Betances are still around.
Given their business model, I think I would rather trade Miller if the price is right, iow, a young asset. They want a pitcher, I would be fine with a position player as well.
#Yankees announce that they’ve acquired LHP Tyler Olson and INF Ronald Torreyes from #Dodgers for INF Rob Segedin and a PTBN or cash.
Schefter says McAdoo may be the favorite for the Eagles' job.
Jackson to the Browns.
my god this is turning into a nightmare.
I am irrationally hoping for a name not mentioned that will make me regret doubting their competence.
unless its bill cowher LINJ, idk who would do that. Jackson was #1 on my list yet the browns got him before we can even interview him. just wow.
Supposedly McAdoo
