Yanks Clobber Sox

The Yanks just beat the Sox 13-8, and it probably wouldn't have been that close had Girardi not gotten cute with the pen.  For the 4th time this seaosn, the Yanks hit 5 homeruns in a game.  The first homer was hit by Greg Bird, and it came when the Yanks were down 1-0 in the second and looked like they were gonna flail against another soft tosser, but Headly walkd and Bird homered.  Then John Ryan Murphy homered.  And before the inning was over Beltran had hit a three run homer.  Drew, finished a triple short of the cycle also hit a three run bomb.  And Didi, who has been smoldering also tossed in a solo shot.

But Girardi pulled Tanaka after he gave up a walk in the second, and replaced him with Andrew Bailey, who had not pitched in the bigs in 2 or three years.  The result probably surprised no one but Joe.   Btw, they used to call the great Joe McCarthy, Marse Joe.  We'll we've got Arse Joe and he managed to use both Betances and Miller in a game where he'd gone into the 7th with a 13-2 lead.   I hope if the Yanks do make the playoffs Betances can go.   Ugh.   Should have been a lot more fun than this.

Failing upward since 2098.

From the NYP:

“We are hoping not to use them, that’s the hope,’’ Girardi said after Betances and Miller cut off a late surge by the Red Sox to help the Yankees to a 13-8 victory in front of 34,416 Wednesday at Fenway Park. “In a sense, we had to stop each inning. We didn’t want it to get out of hand. You are hoping if you stop one inning you wouldn’t have to use the other two guys, but it didn’t work that way.’’

I completely disagee with Jennnings:

•...There’s been some past discussion and debate and who the Yankees’ MVP has been. Seeing the team without Teixeira just might end that debate. He’s been a huge difference maker. The only player more difficult to lose might be McCann.
__

Teix has been unbelievably (literally) good, but his absence has coincided with A-Rod's prolonged slump. If A-Rod had been what he was, Teix's absence would have been greatly mitigated. In fact, it's as if they have lost both.

Murphy could easily replace McCann. He would hit fewer HR at home, but he would hit for more average, hit more 2B, and be better defensively.

I agree with this:

• After a few days of debate about who should play first base against left-handers, Greg Bird made a compelling case yesterday that he’s the best option.
_

But as I said yesterday, the "debate" was ridiculous when you factor in the reverse split issue yesterday.

How could Girardi open his mouth and publicly oppose his GM without knowing that?

Oh and:

•....And Drew’s turned his offense around to become a better all-around hitter the past two or three months (he’s outperformed the alternatives). Sticking to his guns hasn’t always worked for Girardi — Brian Roberts never did turn it around; Derek Jeter was never the best choice in the No. 2 hole last season — but this year, Girardi’s faith and patience with those three have been rewarded.
_

What alternatives were tried? Ryan? He has been one of the worst offensive players in MLB for years.

Roberts' OPS+ with the Yankees was 86.
Drew's after a very SSS hot streak is now 88.

It's as if these writers will bend reality to praise Telflon Joe.

And btw, They said they were going to platoon Didi with Ryan to start the season, however, Ryan was hurt.

If Ryan had been healthy, with the way Didi struggled early, at what point would Girardi have played him every day? My guess is maybe about now, if ever.
