Yanks Win

The Yanks looked like they were gonna roll in the first.   But three straight hits to start only netted two runs, and Big Mike Pineda made them stand up for 7 shutout innings.  He gave up a shift aided double to start the eigth and was lifted for Wilson -- who proceeded to strike out two batter only to have Girardi lift him so Betances could go for yet another  4 out save.   Betances got a ground out to end the 8th, then gave up a 2 run homer - his first of the year in the 9th - blowing the save and taking away Pineda's W.   Fortunately, the Yanks got lucky when the Rays erred on Ramon Flores bunt allowing the Yanks to walk off - why he was bunting only Girardi knows.  It worked out but not by design.

Will this earn Pirela PT since he showed grit and heads up-ness?

Still hate 4 out saves.

Have to think Betances is unavailable tomorrow.

DFA trolls

At 1:25 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

By your illogic Grego would have been DFA'd in April, and so many young players would have suffered a similar fate before rebounding.

So I get the anon thing. On some level you must know that you know nothing about baseball.

At 2:15 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I knew Anon the Troll was lurking in the background, ready to pounce on some Yankee farmhand.

Pirela's confidence is likely shot. If he's not gonna play every day, just send him down to Scranton.

It's gotten so bad with Drew that they may have no choice but to bring up Refsnyder, even if his defense isn't quite where they want it. Of course, the second he boots a routine grounder, Girardi will sit him for a week, so I wary of any call-ups when it comes to guys who aren't considered defensive prowess guys.

At 7:10 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Call him up, if only to give Goofy something to complain about.

At 7:16 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If you be patient with Grego and Eovaldi despite their sucking for long periods, why can't you be patient with your own players?

At 8:01 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Because they traded assets to acquire those players, whereas no such assets were given up for homegrown talent.

Again, very little is driven by actual performance when it comes to this team's decision making. Whether it's the money owed to the players, the assets exchanged to acquire the players or Girardi's discomfort with youth, you can be sure the logical roster move isn't going to happen very often.

Ellsbury should be back soon and the days of Chris Young penciled in the lineup will be over.

Beltran needs to return as soon as he can so perhaps the Yankees can somehow unload him by the trade deadline. Perhaps teams like Anaheim and Houston can use a DH.

Give Flores the everyday job at RF for the rest of the year and see what happens.

At 7:09 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I'd go with Mason Williams over Flores just because I think he has higher upside. Sucks that Heathcott can't seem to stay healthy.

At 7:35 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Neither Gardner nor Ellsbury have career histories of being durable (and Beltran looks like he is doing everything in slow motion).

So there should be playing time for most of the young OF, and if given the chance by the veteran-obsessed manager (which is not a certainty) their skill and ability to stay on the field will sort itself out.

Chad J.:

When the Yankees activate closer Andrew Miller will depend on how things go in tonight’s rehab outing with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Cashman said. Even if the Yankees decide Miller needs only one rehab game, it’s hard to believe he’ll be activated any earlier than Wednesday. Activating him tomorrow would mean the Yankees are willing to immediately use him on back-to-back days, which seems unlikely (though perhaps not impossible).

...

Please note that OF Jacoby Ellsbury participated in simulated game activities today and will do so again tomorrow — and will not play in another minor league rehab game. He is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list prior to Wednesday’s game vs. Oakland.

At 6:04 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Eh, just call Refsnyder up at this point. But make sure to cut Drew in the process, or Refs will get the Pirela treatment.

At 6:54 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

It would be interesting to see what a good manager could do with this team, But since the GM loves him, it won't happen

What Drew does at the plate doesn't seem to matter

At 8:01 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Flaherty just said that Eovaldi he has to figure out a way to go deeper and games… How about firing the manager and get somebody competent will leave him in?

Of all Cashman's bad decisions, hiring this fool is the worst one.

At 8:17 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Time to shake things up. Cut Capuano with Miller's return, DFA Drew, call up Refs.

At 8:27 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think the manager is a bigger problem

At 8:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

IOW, he's probably the reason they are on the team, and why their replacements unless theiy are veterans will have a tough time getting playing time

At 8:32 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree he's a problem, but they're not going to replace him mid-season. So Cashman simply needs to sit down and say, "These guys are playing, period." And take his toys away from him.

At 8:44 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

He did it with Torre in 2005 and that team had a lot more talent and a lot more recent success.

So if he doesn't do it now, I think the most reasonable conclusion is that the manager is doing exactly what he exactly wants.

At 11:12 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

BTW, Refsnyder went 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk and is currently hitting .286/.384/.409/.792. In July, his line is .400/.543/.720/1.263. According to SWB beat writer Donnie Collins, his defense has made strides, and he had this to say during the game:

Donnie Collins ‏@RailRidersTT 6h6 hours ago
The Yankees don't and shouldn't listen to me. But I've seen players wasting good swings here while clearly ready for more. ...
Donnie Collins ‏@RailRidersTT 6h6 hours ago
... Ref is starting to enter that territory.

But, of course, Drew will be right back out there tomorrow with his exit velocity, because he's just the most unlucky player in the world. What a colossal train wreck this organization is, from the top down.

At 4:55 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If they ever do bring him up, I hope they only do it if they're making a firm commitment to playing him. In other words, be as patient with him as they have been with Grego.

At 7:11 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Didi has actually shown signs of life lately, though I remain skeptical that he'll ever hit enough to my liking.

Off topic, but is there any more evidence than the Royals fans flooding the AS Game with votes that the current system needs to be done away with?

At 8:22 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think it's becoming apparent that Girardi's misuse of Betances has had a negative impact on his performance.

At 9:07 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

No doubt. Managing the pen used to be a strength of his, but between his preference for veterans/journeymen and his now mishandling of the staff, he's morphed into a younger Torre, minus three rings.

What's the point of spending 200 million when you feel the lineup like this

Jacoby Ellsbury CF
Brett Gardner LF
Alex Rodriguez DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Chris Young RF
John Ryan Murphy C
Didi Gregorius SS
Jose Pirela 2B
Gregorio Petit 3B

LHP CC Sabathia
