Yanks Complete The Sweep

Jacoby Ellsbury went 4-4 with an HBP and a walk, and also caught the final out of the game.  Brett Gardner hit a 3 run jack and stole two bases.  Tex hit a 2 run bomb.  Out one point McCann and Beltran even had back to back doubles and the Yanks had an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.  At that point a spent Warren, and Esmil Rodgers conspired to give up 5 runs and then Girardi had to get more serious with the pen.Wilson and Carpenter were fine, then Miller walked to guys, and got an error behind him to load the bases with Ortiz up and two out.  He got the Big Cheater to fly out harmlessly to CF.    Nice series, but our inconsistent O and occasional bad starts is gonna burn out the pen unless something changes as the season goes on.

The middle infield is a black hole offensively. It's time to call up Pirela, period.

The Yankees desperately need innings from their starters to give the pen a break. Thankfully it's been up to the challenge thus far.

Feels great to sweep Boston, even though I'm not sure the Red Sox are going to be all that formidable this year, unless they can find some pitching.

Warren is actually doing quite well given how few ML starts he has had.

Refsnyder's error totals have piled up but the second baseman has played good defense of late. He, like Didi, was trying to do too much.

Warren was fine, till the 6th. We need another reliable piece for the pen for situations like that.

Great news about Refsnyder.

Hope to see him up by ASB playing 2B everyday.

I think Warren will build arm strength and go deeper into games.

Best anon yet.

I think Girardi took a calculated gamble trying to milk one more out out of Warren with an 8-2 lead. Had the game been closer, he wouldn't have tried that or gone to Rogers.

Thinking about why the Yankees have surprised at least me to this point, beyond the obvious that Tex and A-Rod have performed at what is probably their peak, I think we also have to acknowledge that having Ellsbury and Gardner batting in the top two spots everyday has been huge.

Jeter was pretty much an automatic out for large parts of the season, and really, as underwhelming as Gregorius has been in the field, he is light years better than Jeter, as is Drew over Roberts, and so it is reasonable to think that has helped significantly, even with their ugly offense up the middle.

All I ask is that they find a way to commit to one young offensive player over the course of the season.

An opportunity to do that will almost certainly arise.

I just hope they take it.

Things have gone well, and that's great, but they are very vulnerable to an offensive decline.

I was looking at the Yankees' individual OPS+

Young's is 192. For his career, he's at 95, so one has to think it's unavoidable that he has a massive regression to his mean.

I have mentioned A-Rod (144) and Tex (149).

But I was unaware of Gardner (139) and Ellsbury (136). That's awesome because they are about the only two hitters on the team that are in their prime and also hit for AVG.

So people can talk about pitching and defense, but let's be real.

If you have that kind of offensive production, you are going to win games if your pitching doesn't suck.

LINJ is very correct in his assessment of the top 2 spots in the lineup.

Last year, by bowing down to an obviously over-the-hill Jeter, and keeping him in the #2 hole all year, we probably cost ourselves 3-4 games. I would venture to say that if we went Ellsbury - Gardner all year in the 1-2 spot in the lineup, we are right there with the Royals for the Wild Card.

Gardner hit .256 last season and Ellsbury hit .271. They are both hitting much higher this year, both AVG and OBP. Ify keep it up at the top of the lineup, that will make a huge difference.

In football, last night's game would have lingered in frustration, but in baseball, 162 games makes that unnecessary. Stuff happens. Win the series.

Drew: .149 .235 .351

After the season he had last year (despite a few HR), when your SS can't hit either, this is unacceptable.

I'm not highly knowledgable on advanced fielding statistics, but I'd be curious to compare Drew's defense at 2B to that at SS this season, as well as Gregorius's defense at short thus far.

The sample size is too small to be meaningful.

As I thought.

It appears Pirela will be activated Wednesday.

Good. Would it kill them to play him 3-4 games a week? Because if it is 1-2, it could be an unfair challenge.

He's virtually the same age as Gregorius, and if Pirela hits, it would take pressure off of the SS "prospect."

The infield tonight recalls a Torre house money game but it isn't close to that.

Gardner and Ellsbury just made my point about the difference between this year and last

Gardner's AB changed the way A-Rod was pitched

Time for McCann to show signs of life on a sustained basis

Ellsbury is overpaid, but I can stomach is contract because he's actually performing offensively and defensively. Having him and Gardner feels redundant at times, but it's really nice having two guys with speed, plus defense and a good eye for the ball.

If they had one true impact bat hitting behind them, this offense could be dangerous

At 4:28 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I don't know if a good outfielder could have caught that but Beltran looked 80 going after the ball.

I do like Gardner's defense in left, since it's essentially another CF.

I agree with you on needing an impact bat, plus a couple of young players with upside, all while praying Teixeira and ARod continue to produce.
