Yanks: Tanaka to the 15 Day

The Yanks have placed Masahiro Tanaka on the 15 day DL. Ugh.  I guess they'll call up Bryan Mitchell.  We'll see as Capuano was also supposed to be close, and they do sometimes choose the lesser option.

This is Brian Cashman's Yankees. Whitley will take Tanaka's spot, and if he falters, it will go to Capuano when he's ready.

Young homegrown players with upside are not welcome on this team.

Whitley's homegrown.

My mistake, but either way, my "with upside" qualifier stands. :)

Whitley still has a bit of upside since he was shifted from reliever to starter about 2 years ago. But they should be calling up Mitchell.

Cashman mentioned Mitchell last night. I actually think he will get a shot. The question is for how long. Even if he is doing well, will that be enough?

I also expect Tanaka to get surgery fairly soon no matter what they say.

I have wondered to myself if Tanaka's contract plays anything into the train of thought behind lack of surgery last year. Tanaka has the opt out in his contract after the 2017 season. Say he has surgery last July when he was first diagnosed. He misses the remainder of 2014 and all of 2015. He then has 2016 & 17 to prove he's healthy and opt out. Yanks then would have paid him 108 mil for 2 1/2 years of production. Pretty Horrendous.

Although it is typically the road less traveled, there is a chance he could pitch through the tear so the Yanks let it ride, but they also know worst case scenario Tanaka has surgery this year, out remainder of 2015 & 16. If he has a productive 2017 year I still wouldn't think he opts out of the remaining 3 years 67 mil. Teams wont be feeling exactly comfortable with only 1 year back from TJS who has a very small track record in this league.

Probably way over-thinking it...

All things being equal, and they aren't, I have said from the time he signed the contract that the best thing that can happen is for him to opt-out.

He already has a ton of mileage on the arm, and he would only have more.

They were burnt badly by re-upping CC.

The key is, as it has always been under this overrated GM, developing your own.

He know it. He said in 2007 that Hughes, Joba, and IPK would obviate the need to sign FA starters.

Obviously, that turned out to be dust in the wind.

Because there is no accountability for the GM, he has a chance to reset.

Do they take the pain by FINALLY developing from within, or do they just rinse and repeat with the same old shit.

Either way, again, they CANNOT lose two seasosn with Tanaka.

I agree with Lawyer a few posts above. I believe Mitchell will get a shot, possibly in about 7-8 days if they go to the 6st starter bit again.

To me, the big burden is on CC. He has to be better. We need 7 innings very time out, and he has to keep the game competitive.

On a positive side, regardless of today's outcome, major kudos to Cashman for this excellent bullpen.

Wait, a developing young picture isn't going to win the Cy Young award in his first full season ?

At 2:02 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I'd rather have a GM who is good at developing starters and position players He sucks at that

I'm hopeful the new development folks combined with ownership mandate of cutting payroll will turn that tide. But until the obsession with veteran journeymen to fill out roster spots (be that Girardi's obsession or Cashman's), there will always be resistance to a youth movement.

I think the season is going to tell us a lot especially of Tanaka goes down. Do they truly give their young pictures a chance or do they make a stupid shortsighted trade?

Mikey F. seemed to intimate that maybe Tanaka was reluctant to have surgery. I raised the possibility of a couple months ago.

All things being equal with or without Tanaka, I still think offense will be the biggest problem on this team.

They didn't make any short-sighted trades last season. I hope they stay away from Hamels in particular because RAJ will charge the moon.

At 4:56 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

But their approach was; why get McCarthy and why not trade Robertson? That's the shortsighted mentality.

Hamels will cost too much in terms of prospects so I hope that doesn't happen.

Perhaps someone like Kazmir if the A's drop out of the race or Gallardo if the price is right.

Both guys will be Free Agents so it should not cost alot in terms of prospects.

I am sure Cashman will come up with something if Tanaka is done for the year unless Nova comes back hopefully around June.

At 6:03 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yeah how about Brtan Mitchell. That would be his best trade, keeping his own

Need more experience.

We all know how the Yankees operate. Experience over youth

At 7:44 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

True, even though that experience is often mediocre to bad, while the youth has some level of upside, depending on the player.

I think the Yanks are ok, they always find a way. I love how every evaluator wrote the Yanks off this year, it's still early but we can win games. After FA, teams like the White Sox were given the championship. Happens every year. This injury creates an opportunity and I expect someone will step up.

I've been encouraged so far, especially with A-Rod and Teix's starts, though both seem to be in a slump at the moment. The pitching has been good overall. Even McCann is starting to hit (now if he would just walk!). My only real complaints are the performances of Beltran and Headley up to this point.

This team has a failing on the field business model. They get worse every year and one month doesn't change that.

At 10:53 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Some of the most patently superfluous and utter wastes of money and roster spots, Capuano and Ryan, are nearing being ready.

Failing upward continues...

Cashman on A-Rod:
"He's come in and said all the right things," Cashman said. "In the clubhouse, he has always been accepted, how the players relate with him and he relates with his teammates. He has always been a really good, exceptional, baseball mind. His interaction with the press and his off-the-field stuff, he obviously has been great since he came back."

Saying all the right things could never be said of Cashman, post 2010 or so.

The Yankees haven’t given up on the Cuban market just yet. According to someone with knowledge of the situation, the team held an individual workout for infielder Andy Ibanez this week in Tampa.
Ibanez, 22, was also scouted by the Yankees earlier in April at a workout in Miami. He is considered to be a middle infield prospect not in the class of Red Sox prize Yoan Moncada, whom the Yankees failed to sign this spring.
Ibanez is eligible to sign immediately and is expected to get up to a $10 million bonus. The Yankees would have to pay a 100-percent tax because they exceeded their limit on international spending for this signing period with a flurry of moves last July.

Could be a long term solution at 2B

Probably still need a shortstop first
