Rangers Extend Staal
The Rangers are closing in on or have completed a 6 year extension for Marc Staal. This means their top three of McDonagh, Girardi and Stall are locked up long term, while Kevin Klein has another year or two on his contract.
In the short term, this means they won't be trading Staal for help at the deadline. It means they'll probably have to trade prospects, and that will be tough. But, it also won't disrupt the back line as the Rangers go for it this year.
Long term, unless the cap goes way up, it will mean the Rangers probably have too much invested in 3 Dmen.
Frankly, I would rather have extended Stepan. It will be a shame if we ever have to part with a young player because we have so much tied up in the top three.

Stephan should be the priority, but last time they were in this situation, they traded Callahan and got older with less picks. So an extension for Staal is preferable to that model.
Stepan is apparently next.
LNJ I think you have to admit St.Louis has worked out well.
What about the opportunity cost of the picks? You would expect a short-run bump, but is that worth the cost over time? Not yet. They have to win the Cup to justify the trade. Nothing less, imo.
They were a goalie interference and a few bounces there way from winning the cup -- that trade accompliahed exactly what it was meant to do -- without St. Louis were out in round 2 and maybe round 1
I would have preferred that to the trade every single team.
Giving up a younger player and two first rounders for a player near 40 is moronic.
Callahan's style of play will shorten his career, and has already made him miss major time.
The two first rounders were ridiculous, though.
But they probably felt all powerful after getting Duclair and Buchnecvich in the third the previous year.
Cant forget they need to extend Kreider also. IMO too much for Staal. Better they keep him. but too much in top 3.
That was my point. It's a bit risky considering the young players and what's on the way.
Remember also that Lundquist is 30. He has a few more years at peak and then his reflexes start to decline. So if they don't win the cup in the short term, they will no longer have a goalie who is capable of carrying them on his back to the Cup, which will necessitate a huge rebuild.
They drafted two really good goalie prospects last June. Both of whom they believe can be future #1's.
I would NEVER over leverage the present for any player.
Lawyer;
They actually over leveraged the present for Hank.
