Yanks: The Two Yoan Theory

Today, the Yanks were linked with another Cuban named Yoan.  This one is a 21 year old 6'4" 190 RHP named Yoan Lopez.  Like Yoan Moncada, he will count against the Yankees already blown out IFA pool, and like Moncada, they should sign him.

As policy, the Yanks should be grabbing every electric arm or bat they can, whenever the rules permit.  From now until 6/15/15 they can grab any IFA they fancy for just money without being punished any further.   Can't do it again in IFA until, 2017 so it's necessary for them to keep "gaming" the IFA market now.  Then their best bets become hitting on some draft picks -- which is easier to do when you keep them -- and going for Asian and over 25 IFA's going forward.

Bur they absolutely should start by grabbing both Yoans.

Yes.

Ideally, I would never spend huge money on any veteran pitcher because of the inherent fragility, but since the Hughes/Joba/IPK paradigm-fail, that, in turn, was exacerbated by the Melky/AJack/Montero fail, they have been on a slippery slope of more new compensatory spending to offset older compensatory spending.

Since their stated intention (and accompanying behavior) is to be good enough to not be eliminated before early September, they should continue to spend when a unique opportunity presents itself. IMO, Lester without compensation is one of those especially given the potential landmines that Tanaka, Pineda, and CC present (although his ceiling may be a #3 or #4 now).

If somehow Tanaka, Pineda, and Lester were all healthy and pitching up to their potential, they could actually be a legitimate WS contender.

I don't see a clear path off of this path given Cashman's latest nonsense about having no interest in creating a "perfect beast" (if you don't aspire to be great, it's hard to ever be very good).

But using their financial advantage for every talented young player that the rules permit (as I mentioned on the last thread) offers the only hope that this cycle of under performance can ever be altered, irrespective of which clowns run this team.

That's the idea, throw enough picks and dollars at amateurs and the team will run into situations where they wouldn't think of replacing their kid -- like we're seeing with Betances now.
