Yanks: Randy Levine Threatens "Surprises"
On an otherwise sunny day in Yankee-land, as they continued to add to their minor league talent base and at least marginally improve they're 40 man roster, scary Randy Levine raised the specter of surprises is. Though, I guess at this point trading a good first round pick and larger bonus pool for an old free agent wouldn't be a surprise. So let's hope this dark emmisary has stopped misinterprettting our demands and means pleasant surprises instead, like Moncada.

They signed Soriano (R.) in response to what Boston did. If they sign Lester and Sandoval, the Yankees will respond, but that would be particularly dumb because if they want to spend, Lester should be the target since there is no pick required and LH pitching is so critical to winning in YS.
I don't view Moncada as a surprise, merely a recognition of their high-end talent deficit and their limited ability to acquire it.
I thought we were getting Lester once he was traded, but now I'm against all contracts for over 30s. Though his would be less odius because there's no pick attached.
I'm hoping the surprises are all foreign though.
I don't want him either, but I am putting myself in Levine's shoes and then imposing a little baseball sense. A reach, I understand.
Plain and simple Im afraid !! LNJ is right Moncada is a big name for us but nothing in the big scope.
Prob means Yanks are unloading the farm for Tulo..
So Cash man says he would be open to signing two starters, not big ones though. That is the reason they keep needing to sign starters; they refuse to trust young ones except when every shitty veteran options fail.
If that is true, I hope GM Randy intervenes and signs Lester.
He also said he is not surprised by Martin's contract. Translation: there are GM as dumb as him.
Uh-oh!
Isn't putting yourself in Levine's shoes and imposing a little baseball sense an oxymoron?
It's hope over experience?
I fear that the Stockholm Syndrome may be next and I really hope that doesn't include trying to look like him.
More seriously, let's say they sign McCarthy and some other fungible starter who has had an up and down career, possibly because of injuries like McCarthy.
As long as the veterans are healthy, the rotation will be:
Tanaka
Pineda
CC
McCarthy
Other veteran signed
That leaves Greene, Mitchell, Nova, and at some point Severino
waiting when they should be competing for ML jobs.
And that doesn't include Crapuano being in the mix.
I'm OK with them signing one starter on a short-term deal who doesn't have health risks (not McCarthy, in other words) given the rotation's inevitable injuries. Otherwise, as LINJ said, the slots need to be left open for guys like Greene, Mitchell, Banuelos, Nova and eventually Severino to compete for.
I think Cashman wants Headley and McCarthy because it shows ownership that his trades worked out. The danger is that their post trade performances were SSS, out of context from their recent past over larger sample sizes, and they both carry considerable injury risks.
Hal's comments notwithstanding, if Cashman's actions mirror his words ti could get harder for kids to get an opportunity, including Refs and Pirela as well as the pitchers.
Micheal Kay is pushing for the Yanks to pick up Ike Davis .I think he could do well in YS but if A Rod is going to play some 1st where does Ike fit?
Add Rauuul Ibanez to the list of "no thanks:

About what you'd expect from Michael Kay. All he can think about is the opportunity to bleat "See you" a few times. He can't carry Frank Messer's throat lozenges . . . .
Thats funny!!
I wasn't interested in Ibanez. Not enough walks.
What do you make of Billy Hart being fired?? Just a move because he's a Newman guy ??
He came from a football background, and I have long been against them drafting football players or hiring football players, so, not a big deal to me.
Agreed in general, but I assume you make exceptions for Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig :-)
Sports are more specialized now. In the old days they were more seasonal, and good athletes played them all, but the money was in baseball.
Agreed. Just pulling your leg. But I wouldn't shy away from a good baseball player just because he's good at football, I just won't overrate his baseball potential based on his football.
Shea Morenz...
Drew Henson was the real deal until the dreaded "Hitch" came along.........
Who thought Brady would be an all time great and Henson would be a never was? Not me.
I don't want Ibanez either, I think it's kind of stange that a somewhat meaningless position is taking so long to fill, seemingly in part because they keep getting turned down. That could be on Girardi. He seems like a dick to work for.
Where did Derek Shelton land? I think they might be waiting on someone.
Funny thing is Drew i believe is a minor league hitting coach for us in Tampa ??
Drew is a minor league coach for the Yanks.
The Sox may be getting Ramirez and Sandoval
Headley and McCarthy would be a comical response.
Either man up and rebuild or sign Lester.
