Yanks Win Rain Shortened, Pen Saving Game!

Yanks just beat Yu Darvish, thanks to Mother Nature and the reasonably priced True Yankee, Brett Gardner.  After Cervelli scored on a balk,  Gardy hit  his 10th homer, which gave the Yanks the 2-1 lead that the rain upheld.   The rain started in the bottom of the 5th, so it was official.   This is great because the Yanks didn't have to use their pen.  Phew after last night's 14 inning monstrosity.   Now let's see who's on the team tomorrow!

I really don't like Cashman's recent comments about Refsnyder:

• Pretty cut and dry reason why he hasn’t called up Rob Refsnyder. “I don’t think we would be significantly upgrading at second base right now,” Cashman said. “… If you did see him, he would be probably more likely an outfielder for us.” Cashman said Refsnyder has a legitimate chance to be the big league second baseman next year, but they don’t feel he’s ready to do that right now. Cashman said he thinks the immediate impact would be much less than outsiders might expect. “It’s a super big jump to the big league level,” Cashman said.

We're talking about Brian Roberts. Brian Roberts. Not Robinson Cano, or even a league average player.

And obviously, if Ref plays the OF, how does that help him for next year?

You're wanting him to be better, defensively, at 2B than he is right now. You know if they call him up Girardi won't play him at 2B after he screws up his first DP.

Now, I was told about two weeks ago, that he would be up soon, so Cashman's posturing may be part of a game we're not privy to. And he's done that before.

I still think kids will be up soon, and possibly, even one tomorrow.

I listened to the full interview — Cashman doesn't come off as badly as he does when you read that quote as a stand alone. He sounded very high on Refsnyder. He also implied the decision to keep him in AAA came after consulting with Gene Michael and other scouts.

To add, Phil is right — Girardi wouldn't play him the second he botched a play in the field.

Yeah, I think they are actually playing him in right to scotch guard him against Girardi. Someone in the org did tell me he would be up pretty soon. So unless something changed, I expect he will be.

Might also be a pony show for other teams or Hal, that justify his pursuit of of a righty OF.

I think more DFA's are coming.

Pirela and Roller need to be up ASAP, especially with Teixeira's health being a question mark.

That would be good. Roller would go off at YS.

While I would love for Refsnyder to be called up now, if he really is not ready for full time 2B duty in the opinions of Stick and Cash and whomever else, I can live with that. Why Pirela isn't thought of as an option in RF or 2B is beyond me. In fact, I would play Z. Almonte everyday in RF for 2-3 weeks, against all pitching, to see what he's got. He has to be more productive then Ichiro, who has 11 RBIS after 100 games. Sheesh!!

Remember when Cashman forced Cano and Wang on Torre? Bring back that guy. He was also a lot more humble back then, and he didn't spout baseball-techno jargon.

And show or not, if a guy isn't ready for 2B, playing him the OF is the equivalent of malpractice.

Refsnyder hit another homer in the game they started last night and completed today, and Zoilo hit 3!
