Yanks Win as McCann, Girardi and Cash Go Nuts!

Brian McCann walked, homered and tripled to drive in five and lead the Yanks to a 7-3 win over Toronto.   Yes, McCann, do things like that!   Please.   Meanwhile Whitley was good again, and didn't give in, though his pitch count got elevated and he left after 5.   He won his third straight, and the Yanks won yet again with him on the mound, but the bullpen had to be extended.   Warren came in and pitched the 6 and 7th, as the Yanks stretched 1 run lead to a 5 run lead.  Unfortunately, Ramirez came in and gave up back to back doubles which made it 7-3.   So, instead of letting him try to work through it,  Betances was called into to get the outs.  He did K'ing 2 and walking 1.    That was bad enough, but with a 4 run lead in the 9th, Girardi brought in DRob in a non-save situation.

You can say this for the Blue Jays, they grind, and as a result of that, and Girardi's Torre-esque use of his top relievers with a big lead, the Yanks are gonna be pinched in the pen tomorrow.   We might see Ramirez swapped out for another reliever.

Anyway. during the game Davidoff posted an article saying Cashman is expecting to make a trade or trades by the deadline.  That's chilling.

Yanks go for the sweep with a pre-taxed pen.

I would love to see Melky (the 4th OF) back with the Yankees.

And you're right, Girardi, who I basically like, was awful tonight.

No reason not to let Ramirez try and work through his issues that inning. I hope Cashman has a chat with Girardi to remind him that that's how you develop pitchers. Hitting the panic button with a four-run lead is not the way to go.

They'd better not send him down. He has a future on this team.

I think so, too. It was a good night to let him try, but he's just like Torre in his playing for 1 win and disregarding the next game, games or future or the player and the organization.

One problem Girardi has is that he has people screaming at him from all directions. If the Yanks had lost to Toronto after having a 5-run lead going into the 8th, one can only imagine the reactions. Not only was this a "double" game, it was a start by Whitley, who is in reality the Yanks' second most reliable starter (and the other three have been very unreliable), so the loss would be twice as bad. So it makes sense to play for the win on this occasion.

I agree that I hope Cashman doesn't trade away anything resembling a prospect in exchange for more worn-out journeymen. I wonder what he's really up to, however, since it's very unlike him to telegraph his plans. Maybe he's trying to poke Johnson and Roberts . . . maybe he's trying to get other GMs to call him. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

BTW note the timing of the draft signings. Two of the first were Holder and McFarland, where he got discounts, but their deals didn't leak out until after he had signed deCarr. Now the math makes sense, and if he gets good discounts from the last 3 top 10 draftees he can go after another signability case or two.

I see that the comment section on LoHud is intent on trading for Lee and Utley, thinking that the price would be cheap because of their contracts.

As if the Phillies don't have to face their fans.

That's part of the reason why I stopped posting.

Now, if it was trading young for young to balance out areas of surplus and need, I would be interested.

Melky would be the best OF on our team right now, at least bat wise.
