Yanks: Reportedly Cervelli to Return, Murphy to Go Down

This is gross. Word has come out that Francisco "When I'm not injured, I'm Suspended" Cervelli will return to the Yankees tomorrow and John Ryan Murphy will be sent down to the minors.  All Murphy's done is outplayed both Cervelli and McAnn.  If Miller Huggins had thought this way, there never would have been an Iron Horse, at least not with the Yankees.  And wreaks of a Girardi preference.   Murphy's a catcher with offensive upside, so Girardi wants him gone.   He probably only plays McAnn because he can't hit anymore.

But this is Cash's fault for not trading Cervelli at any point over the last few years.   He could have gotten something.  Especially from a dumb NL team.   For the one right thing they do, like keeping Ramirez and bagging Daley, they do this all over the place more often.  Just a terribly inefficient use of talent.

Does Cervelli have options? If not, that may play into this.

Separately, is Girardi really opposed to catchers who can hit but are also good behind the plate? My sense has always been that he just didn't like catchers who can't catch, and I'm not aware that he has any dislike for Murphy.

That parts more or less a joke, but he had Montero run out of town and wouldn't play him once at catcher.

I don't think Girardi's a good manager, and I don't think we're a better team with Cervelli.

Murphy is simply not getting enough playing time.

Someone once said: "How many people have to die for a mistake?"

In baseball terms: "How many prospects have to be misused because of stupid signings"?

On another of their catching prospects:

C Gary Sanchez, who was benched yesterday for disciplinary reasons, had a closed door meeting with the coaching staff according to Nick Peruffo. “Gary is out of there for a couple of days until we decide he deserves to play again, plain and simple,” said someone on the staff. This isn’t the first time they’ve had to discipline him — Sanchez was demoted to Extended Spring Training a few years ago because he refused to catch a bullpen session, among other things.

WTF? Weird.

I wonder if they're throwing him under the bus so they can trade him for Cliff Lee.

Nah, it's just that not everyone can be as mature as Derek Jeter was at that age. Which is what the Yankees don't understand, seemingly.

Cervelli is out of options according to George King (we can probably believe him on this) so they probably don't want to lose him for nothing. If we put our poker hats on, the logical goal is to trade Cervelli for some value, possibly as part of a package. The best way to do that is if he shows he is healthy and hitting at the ML level. Meanwhile, Murphy catches regularly at AAA and can come back at a moment's notice. The only downside for Murphy is if what he needs is to hit against ML pitching every day, but he's not going to get to do that with the Yanks unless McCann gets hurt.

They're not making the move till next week, so maybe C will get traded in the meantime.
