Knicks: Seems Like Melo is Opting Out
Phil Jackson has made it clear that he wants Carmelo Anthony to opt in, and set up a big free agent run next summer. Carmelo egoically wants to test free agency and be romanced by other ball clubs. The Knicks hold his Bird rights and can pay him the most. That said, if he opts out they shouldn't. And I don't think they should even allow him to use them for a sign and trade unless the trading team is will to part with about 10 years of first round picks as part of the deal.
Melo's a great player, but we lost before we had him and we lost with him. The Knicks have now given the reigns to one of the biggest winners in hoops history, in order to try to make the Knicks and Melo into winners. But if he opts out he's only interested in using them and he shouldn't be a Knick anymore.
We can finish out of the money all sort of different ways and we've done after paying a ransom that we're still paying for Carmelo. Hell, he forced a trade to the Knicks before the new CBA could cut into the deal he could get from the Knicks as a term of the trade. So to hell with him if he opts out. The reason he loses is the same reason he'll be opting out. He doesn't believe in anything and doesn't invest in anything. You can't win like that and you can't win with players like that.
So let's see what happens here. If he opts in, he's making a commitment. If he opts out the Knicks should offer no price support and no sign and trade that doesn't come with 5 unprotected #1's.
Enough of this Carmelodrama! He ate up half a season of our lives with it last time his feet got itchy. So if he opts out screw him. And screw him financially.

If only there was a franchise like the Knicks pre-Jackson as a potential trading partner...
Seriously, I wouldn't trade an unprotected 1st for anyone except in the year the pick is to be exercised. There are just too many unknown variables. A true bargain should be made based on what is known at the time of formation. Why should either side reap a windfall based on weird contingencies?
But every Knick GM in the last 10 or 15 years has done it. (As an aside, if Issiah had kept all of his picks rather than trading them for Curry, etc., he may have been able to accumulate enough talent to overcome his personal issues.)
I read today that LeBron will make over $30m on the Beats deal because he received stock in like 2009 when he first signed an endorsement deal, so he might be willing to play for a lot less to get Melo to Miami.
It would suck, but I am preparing myself for it.
Yeah, I don't think we should support his need to be wined and dined. We can offer him the most. Men have to make decisions and so do organizations. If he says no to the most, then screw him. We can be bad without, but we don't have to stay bad forever.
Look and what ARod and CC have done to the Yanks with their opt outs...
When asked about the report that has him signing with the Heat a smiling Anthony said: "I ain't hear about that one. That's a new one."
