Knicks: Interesting Comment at the Derek Fisher Presser
There were a couple of interesting tidbits during the impressive introduction of Derek Fisher today. First, their framing of Carmelo's decision as opt in and opt out was interesting, because it implies that if he opts out he's gone. Second, Mills sort of butted in at one point and drew a distinction between how Fisher and Jackosn, with their championship pedigree would be more attractive to FA's. What he didn't say was, they would be more attractive to FA's than the ringless Donnie Walsh was. This sort of does make it seem like Donnie being in a wheelchair when they were talking to LeBron was responsible for him not signing. That was a sort of wow, as I had never believed that was part of the decision before, but now, you have to think it was part of it, or that Mills is pushing an old agenda. Interesting stuff. But Fisher was really impressive.

Steve Mills working for the Knicks means only that somewhere out there there's a perfectly good wood pile in search of its missing snake. What a skeefy note to add to an otherwise very well managed affair. Donnie Walsh has more class in his little finger than . . .
It would be so nice if this really is the start of our Knicks finding their way out of the wilderness. I am hopeful.
So am I. I thought the opt out opt in business was more interesting. And brought up the Mills business because I had forgotten the rumors of 4 years ago.
Yes, I find that Opt in/Opt out issue fascinating.
I have this nascent sense that Phil J. may well be around to do the one thing that James D. may not feel able do himself: cut Melo loose or move him. This could become a very interesting few weeks if Melo decides that he needs to grab the rest of the brass ring right now. Talk about some high stakes poker!
BTW and as always, Go Rangers!
I think they view Melo's decision as what Phil likes to call one of life's IQ tests.
If he doesn't want to be here, it tells you everything you want to know about him.
Revealingly or not, Stephen A. Stupid whined that Melo should be offended because Jackson isn't coaching him, like he did with the superstars before him. If he can't see that Jackson is physically unable to do it, than stupid isn't a strong enough word.
Donnie Walsh was a very mediocre hire for the Knicks, and only looks good because of what came before and after him. But hiring D'Antoni was suboptimal; his draft picks weren't particularly good, and his trades (even excluding Carmelo since we are told it was Dolan's deal) were mixed.
