Giants Draft: Review Pt. 8 A Foreshortening of Talent
Had the Giants picked any later than they did, they would have missed out on even more talent. As plum as the 12th position seemed in the draft, it didn't fall the way they expected as it was. As I pointed out yesterday, the Beckham/Richburg quinella was probably more valuable than a Martin/Adams or other receiver coupling. Well dig this: what the Giants were really expecting to do was go Beckham, then Richburg, then Jack Mewhort, the tackle from OSU. But because the Quarterback talent in the draft came off the QB talent came off the board at such a staggered pace, and there were not many notable TE's, LB's or pass rushers, WR's DB's and OL's were flying off the board. There was no value in the buffering positions. Had the Giants been able to take Mewhort in the 3rd, there would be vast relief in Giant land. But is was not to be, and for that we can blame both the other positions being week, the disregard for even good RB's (like there were this year) and some teams figuring out that their's more to good line play than size alone.
Thus for Giant purposes there was a foreshortening of desirable talent and they were probably lucky to come out of it with as many players as they like that they did.
Btw, Coach Coughlin says they have signed 11 UDFA's, and the 5 they've already acknowledged seem interesting. To make room, they parted ways with Allen Bradford, Rusty Smith, Junior Mertile and Jordan Gay. I think some of us had had some hopes for Bradford and Mertile.
I'll try to talk about the UDFA's once all of the names are known.

I really want to believe that the Giants will be run well from this point forward, because no one will convince that the Yankees under Cashman aren't run like shit. So I need the offset.
Mewhort was the guy I wanted - recruited by Ohio State as a center but moved to guard and tackle. A guy who truly can and has played all five. He was also a team captain.
I was really disappointed when the Colts took him but I'm glad he was on the radar.
That was the Giants tackle plan. Grab him in the third.
