Giants Draft: Review Pt 6 Offense/Defense Imbalance of Picks

I mentioned this in the first part of the review.  After hearing from the owner that the offense was broken, the Giants went out and spent more picks on defense (4) than they did on offense (3).  I was surprised by this while it was happening but it sort of makes sense.   As deep as this draft was in WR and OL, with a fine reserve of RB's and a deadly dearth of TE's there wasn't a lot to choose from.  Look at it this way, once we took the second best (and may turn out be more than that) WR in the draft -- did we need another one?   Yeah if someone great dropped, but not just to double dip.   To tell you to truth when Marqise Lee was still there after round one, I had some thoughts of chucking my whole OL plan and teaming Lee with Beckham for a foreseeable.  But once round two started that oversight was corrected in the first few picks.

And we had to get Richburg.   Then after taking the best C who can also play G in the draft, we were left high and dry on Giant Type OL's in our windows.  It would have been great to get another tackle, but there really weren't any.

Btw, the way it shook out, if we had taken Martin in the first, we'd have probably had to have taken an outside WR in the second, because there was no one who could contribute right away left in the third, if we had then taken Richburg in the second.

So it has worked out that we got the second best WR and the best C through the first two rounds.  Instead of getting the 3rd best tackle and something like 5-7th best WR in the second.  Knowing that no Giant Type OL's or WR's were going to be there in the 3rd, things worked out about as well as they could.

They took their third and final offensive pick RB Andre Williams in the 4th, and they were done.  They didn't need another back, though there were more backs left after Williams.   Between Williams, Jennings and hopefully Wilson, the rock should be in really good hands.

After that, there were no TE's, we had no room for another WR or RB, and there were no more Giant Type OL's.     So that's why there were just three Offensive picks for the Giants, and all three made a whole lot of sense.

With all of those positions conquered they hit D four times, with four smart, fundamentally sound and  physically tough defenders.    This was a good mix considering pick placement and the thinning of the draft from day 2 to day 3.  So no reason to be disconcerted and the way they did it with Beckham then Richburg probably gave them more value than if they had done Martin and a say Adams or Robinson.    So, well done, Giants.

What they did in this draft is completely defensible, but the only reason why anyone would question this draft at this point is their repetitive failures in prior drafts.

Maybe their thought process in this draft will prevent further draft failures; it's too early to know that now.

So there are two issues, only one of which could still be fixed.

I hope they have.
