Giants Draft: Review Pt. 11 Beckham WAS the BPA

I've read some disturbing media that posited the concept that the Odell Beckham was a riskier pick than Aaron Donald or Zack Martin because he is short for his position.  Well guess what, so are Donald and Martin!  And Donald is not only short for his position but he's underweight, too.  Now, I love all three players and think all will be successful.  Martin was my favorite OL in his draft for the Giants (unless Matthews fell, which felt possible after the creep Lewan blew the doors of the testing part of the combine).   Donald could be the three tech the Giants have always been looking for.  But as long was score will be kept, Odell is the only one who can score, and he can do it three ways or possibly four ways, if they use him out of the backfield as the Packers have with Randall Cobb.

The big areas for the Giants going into the draft were OL, Pass Rush and replacing Nicks. They showed good patience, discipline and self knowledge in hitting all three of those areas with their first three picks.   There were fewer guys who could replace Hakeem's production than there were guys who could help the line.  Although, there were relatively few of both as we saw the Giants make no more OL picks after the second round.

But Beckham has the chance to not only replace 88's production on the outside, he also has the talent to revolutionize our return game.   He is by far our best kick/punt threat since Meggett, though David Wilson has also shown himself to be a great kick returner -- let's hope he can go.

And they were able to get Richburg, who is just as good an OL as Martin or Bitonio, but is a C/G by trade instead of a T/G.  Had Richburg been a T, he might not have made it to our pick.

By the Marqise Lee pick in the second round, all the guys who could step right in and replace what Hakeem Nicks possessed in WR talent and instincts were gone.  He went before the Giants second pick.  Guys like Robinson and Adams would have been good Giants, but might have had a Toomer/Randall-esque learning curve.   Beckham can and will go now.

And after Jack Mewhort was picked toward the end of the second all the Giant Type tackles were gone.

Then they began looking for sacks and picked Jay Bromley.   I like the pick because we've done well with guys like him before.   We also doubled down on pass rush DL's by signing Kelcy Quarles after the draft.  It was weird that he didn't picked, but we should get inside pass rush from one or both.

And if you don't think the Giants had their impact WR's, Giant Type OL's and Inside Pass Rushers stacked, you're on crack.   They took the guys they wanted and in an order that put the BPA first.
