Yankees at the Deadline

No, I'm not talking about Friday's deadline to sign their pick, but the trade deadline at the end of the month.   When they recently won 6 in a row, it was great, but it was also a little scary.   If the Yanks stay in the race, they are likely, once again, to be buyers at the deadline.    Cash will justify the moves by saying the guys really battled and deserved a chance to keep competing.  Or something like that.  But the Yanks should not be buyers at the deadline.   They should either stand pat or start selling.

If they think that this year's spate of injuries to their aging stars is a coincidence: it's not.  Aging players are always more injury prone than younger players.  We're in for a few more years of declining or missing regulars at the rate we're going.

If they stand pat, they will be getting Jeter, Arod and Granderson back.   Plus adding Pineda for the first time. and possibly introducing JR Murphy as the first part of the solution at catcher.  Who knows how this team would finish?  They could make a charge.  But the higher they finish the lower their own picks will be next year.

Now, if the Yanks decide to sell, which I don't think they will, they could probably get a lot for Cano, Hughes, Joba, Kuroda, etc.   They would also be punting on resigning Cano.

I don't think they will do this for two reasons.   First, I think they fear trading Cano would kill attendance.   But the second and real reason why they shouldn't be sellers is that thet are AWFUL TRADERS!    Ever since the Yanks got absolute crap when they traded Mike Lowell, they have had terrible luck offloading talent for "prospects."   Look at the horrible return for Gary Sheffield and Randy Johnson.    Their luck has been atrocious!    So the main reason why they shouldn't be sellers is they flat fricking suck at it.

Thus, I don't believe the Yanks should be buyers or sellers at the deadline.   I think they should stand pat.

And here is my secret fear: they call up JR Murphy this month and he hits.   That will creep out Girardi, but it might also make them willing to throw Gary Sanchez, along with the rest of our top prospects into a trade for Giantcarlo Stanton.  Now he's a great young bat, but we're gonna need to start filling multiple positions, hopefully with non-castoffs in the relatively near term, and we can't afford the to send the top of our farm for anyone that even might be available.

Hopefully, they stand pat and let the injured guys return and give the kids more chances.

Cash won't be able to help himself.. This team is what it is. Very streaky. In many ways winning this many in a row will put false hope where it's not needed. Personally I'd be fine if A-Rod does not play another game for us again. I know El Capitian won't go, but at what point do you phase him out? He's not going to have the range he used to due to his age, and now with the injury even less so. I know Stanton is going to be a stud, but let's not get foolish here. Don't need to give up the farm for him, but I'd certainly see what the Marlins would be asking for. I'd be very happy with a top 3 of CC, Pineda (if he returns to form) and Nova if he can be consistent. I think if anything they should trade Joba and or Hughes, rather than lose for the draft picks(would they net us any?). Seems like a different type year for the Yankees, though like the Rangers/Giants if they do it right it will be fun to watch our prospects come on board and see what our new Core will be.

Hughes will net us a pick if we offer him arbitration after the season. Maybe Joba, too. Certainly Grandy and Cano.

I doubt Joba is worth a pick. He has missed a lot of time with injuries the past couple of years, and this year he is no great shakes. And don't even dream of offering him arbitration - he would grab the $13 million.

Hughes, Grandy and Cano. That should get us at least 2 supplemental picks - 3 if Robbie leaves.

and 4 if Judge doesn't sign.

He'd be a fool if he doesn't. He most likely will not go higher next year, and he also will have -zero- leverage. So if he land in the 2nd round next year, for example, some team may offer him just 100,000, take it or leave it.
