The Untouchables
Well, with free agency, and probably the major trade market opening Friday, the Yanks really only have 3 untouchable young players. They are Jesus Montero, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain. Of course, Cano is now a veteran and he's not going anywhere. But Montero, Hughes and Joba are The Big Three, and if Chash can get through the offseason with all three in tow, another high end starter, and an improved outfield, he will have done a great job. If he loses anyone of them for anything other than a young superstar, he will have failed. And I really don't expect him too. He's far too sharp and patient to do anything but wait out the market to his advantage. Go Cash!

Personally, I'd have to problem giving up Hughes for a difference-maker. I'd sooner keep Austin Jackson, as I think he's going to blossom into a star.
If the Yankees intend on keeping Montero, they should move him to right field. He'll reach the majors more quickly that way.

I wouldn't give up Hughes or Joba for anything that seems to be available. I'd trade Austin Jackson but it would only be for Halladay and not for Granderson.
Phil, I wonder if Joba/Phil are still untouchables. I have no problem with keeping both. I wonder, after this past season, if the confidence level is still so high that they would pass on Halladay to keep these young arms. Is it possible that there is a question mark on one of these kids that may change the mindset since last offseason? Halladay, along with our current staff, gives us a certain chance at being in two or three more World Series right now. I am not advocating that either be a chip but I wonder what the Yanks are thinking.
They still so young. Roy Halladay didn't break out till he was 25, and neither of them are there yet. The Yanks would be foolish to trade them, unless they know something that's not in the data.
I don't disagree. I watched for years as the Yanks gave away their farm, so I'm not a big advocate of trading our young stars. I am just excited at the prospect of getting a competitor like Halladay, even at 33. He would be good for the young talent, including Burnett.
I know and that's the yanks thinking, too.
Montero is too slow footed to play the OF and 1B is occupied for the foreseable future.
He won't make it as a catcher.
The Yanks believe Montero will make it as a catcher and so do more and more people who have seen his progress.
Phil, how long before we see Montero in the bigs?
Some time this coming season.
That would be huge for his development. Big things cannot be expected in his first year up, but just for him to get a taste of the big stage and hit his first home run would be fun for all of us.
No question Montero's bat is likely ready for the bigs sometime in 2010. Phil, are you saying the Yankees think his glove work will also be ready for NY?

The Yanks have been really impressed with his progress. We'll see. He sure blocks the plate like a man.
So Phil,
A half year in Trenton and another in SWB and then called up?
