Fat Chance?

Leonard Davis, late of the Arizona Cardinals, is scheduled to visit the Giants tomorrow if he doesn't sign with the Cowboys or Redskins before then. This is a curious move by the Giants. When they cut Luke Petitgout last month, it seemed like they were gonna let David Diehl play Left Tackle until the super athletic Guy Whimper was ready. Now it looks like they will add Davis to either play Tackle or Guard, and it will limit their flexibility they had with the younger Diehl and Whimper on the left side of the line. Also, with the Cowboys and Redskins competing for his services, it seems unlikely that we will be able to structure a deal that would allow us to get rid of the big fellow once Whimper is ready.

On the plus side, the runblocking for Brandon Jacobs would be insane. Oh well, we'll see.

From The Infamous SCOOP....

Cato June on the weakside Joey Porter on the strong side. They're talking about it. Big time focus on LBs right now. Things are picking up.

I know. Their focus is back.

At 7:31 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

have you heard anything close to that

I heard their focus was back, about ten minutes before Eric posted his SCOOP stuff. I don't know where their focus was (unless it was on Clements, etc) but it was apparently back.

would you rather have tatum bell or rhodes

Bell if he's healthy, but I think Rhodes is pretty much a done deal. He's staying over night.

Just got this:
Emailing out to my buddies tonight I would like to give a quick rundown on the Giants first day of FA

- Dominic Rhodes visited, contract talks delayed until tomorrow

- The Giants are strongly pursuing LB Joey Porter. Coach Tom Coughlin, Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, and General Manager Jerry Reese all want him and I seriously doubt they don't get him.

- Spagnuolo wants to experiment and have Mathias Kiwanuka play SAM, he thinks he would be a perfect fit there and it would enable him more playing time then he would have gotten if he played DE regularly. It is an experiment that probably won't ever happen but this is what Spags wants.

- The Giants have reached out to LB Tully Banta-Cain earlier in the day, but since then all contact has halted.

- LB Cato June is a main target along with Porter for this offseason. He is one of the players that the Giants would rather have a wait and see approach with, but if they can get him for the "right price" early on then they will do so. I haven't heard anything about him being scheduled to come in.

- Leanord Davis contacted and scheduled a visit with the Giants, was then contacted by the Redskins and scheduled a visit, if he sees the Giants first then expect him to still go see the Skins, who wouldn't?

- OT Mike Gandy interests the Giants, he seems to be a fall back option of Leanord Davis doesn't work out, although he could just be depth either way.

- The Buffalo Bills have officially rejected the Giants offer for Willis McGahee saying "We are looking for more, and are now headed in a different direction"

Also, the Giants will sign 2 LB's and 1 DT here in FA. Looks like they're put off DB till the draft.

imagine u posted that on BBI people would think your god...but thanks for the info...you think were gonna get this done quickly i dont feel like loosing these FA's

At 8:53 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I think we'll get it done pretty fast. BTW, the DT name I'm hearing most is Ian Scott, though I had also heard Vonnie Holiday (but didn't he get re-signed?)

At 8:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yea im pretty sure holiday was resigned

At 8:57 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

So then, expect Ian Scott.

from wikipedia

2007
On February 21, 2007 the Dolphins re-signed Holliday to a four-year deal that would prevent the upcoming free agent from hitting the open market, where he was surely to cash in after a stellar 2006 campaign. The new deal was worth approximately $20 million, and he will make $7 million in the first year alone.[2]

We finally have some news and everyone is asleep!

At 9:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am still awake :)

At 9:52 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

What do you think of the stuff?

At 9:52 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I just got home. Keep it coming.

At 9:54 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

thank you for the news!!!! In your mind are these potential moves the bang we were looking for? Would you say that the 2 LB's are Porter and June? Are we still going to give Leonard the best offer he will get? Now I am excited. I want Porter June and Leonard!!!

At 9:56 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I don't know who the LB's will be, but most likely there will be 2 out of the ones we've mentioned here. I'd say June and either Porter or Banta-Cain...

I don't think they're gonna let Davis leave the building without a deal tomorrow.

At 9:56 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am excited that we are actually close to doing something. Don't ask me why but I want Davis and Porter the most. Rhodes ehhh but I guess he will be more useful if we get Davis.

At 9:58 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like that even more them not letting Davis leave without a deal!! The fact is, the better our running game is the more pressure it takes off Eli.

At 10:02 PM, Blogger Rich said...

Francesa views Porter as a 3-4 LB..

At 10:04 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

that's what he's played, at one point he was at least athletic enough to play in a 4-3 and maybe he still is. I guess we might find out.

At 10:05 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Were these potential moves the kind of splashes we should have hoped for? Does the potential add of Ian Scott mean Willie Jo's days are numbered? Is the potential Scott move a good one?

At 10:07 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Scott's fine. I think they splashes they had in mind involved Clements and Thomas but they couldn't get them in or something.

At 10:17 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

80 million reasons why they could not get Clements in LOL In hindsight it looks like Reese was fiscally responsible on this one, I can't get on him too much. Considering SF had more cap room then we did.

At 10:31 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I wonder what Detroit wants for Tatum Bell.

At 10:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What do you think he is worth?
McGahee was not worth a 2nd...
Thanks for the updates.

At 10:48 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I dunno. I'd try to give a second day pick and maybe a player. The Lions have many, many needs.

At 10:59 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

The Lions want a first day pick. Screw it.

At 11:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just reading that Travis Henry might be a FA...

At 11:16 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

yeah, he's due a big roster bonus soon, and I suspect he'll want a big guarantee.

At 11:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He is due 8.3...Is there a formula on what is offered to guys in this situation?

Or is he going to want the 8.3 up front plus a new contract?

Even after today, 8.3 seems a lot to pay a guy who would be splitting the handoffs....

At 12:10 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

yeah, he's likely to be too expensive for a guy who can't beat out Jacobs. The advantage to trading for McGahee or Bell would be not having to bonus them. It's looking more and more like Rhodes.

At 7:14 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good Morning! Let's hope things turn our way today. Besides Rhodes are there positive vibes on Davis??

At 7:15 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

If he shows up, we'll probably sign him.

At 7:39 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's what I want to hear!!! Most papers say he is showing up but in the same article by Vacchiano he says agent says no while Giants say yes. Let the fun begin!! Here's to hoping he shows!!!

At 7:47 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

yeah, it's still sort of a mystery as to whether or not he's showing up. Another mystery is whether or not Reese can close a deal, or whether he's gonna be like Ernie was and let players they want walk out the door.

At 8:24 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Now Ralph Vacchiano says Leonard Davis is not coming in for a visit.

At 10:44 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are right about that mystery Reese being able to close the deal. I guess we will soon find out. I am just amazed how no one wants to visit us(well at least our top targets)
