A Glut of Pitching
You'll immediately see where this is going. Right now, between our bullpen and AAA pitching we have a glut of major league or near majorleague pitching including: Mo, Farnsworth, Proctor, Bruney, Britton, Vizcaino, Myers, Karstens, Rasner, Veres, Hughes, Sanchez, Clippard, Ohlendorf, Jackson, White, Beam,Cox,Whelan and Pavano. We should be able to trade two of these pitchers (not the Mo, Hughes, Sanchez) to Atlanta, and get Gonzalez without trading Melky.
Even if it's not for Gonzalez, we have too many pitchers for too few spots next season, and a dearth of upperlevel position prospects on the horizon. Let's get something done.

It would be cool. Let's see what happens with the kids in ST. We still have too many pitchers.
i think it's safe to say that henn, rasner, and karstens (and maybe beam to some extent) are as good as gone
i think bruney has nothing to offer, but i can understand why he's still on the roster
as for britton, i'd hate to see him optioned down, but it just might happen
I like Bruney.
I like Bruney too. You can't have enough power arms in the pen.
Now let's trade for a young, high ceiling catching prospect.
rich, we have the surplus to do it without harming the farm!
Klapisch makes some interesting points in his column (although I disagree with his take on Clemens). I don't think Cash would trade Pavano if he had to pick up salary.
don't get me wrong, i love bruney's arm, but his control is terrible. he's going to walk the park next season, and you know how quick torre is with the hook when his relievers start doling out BBs.
i've said this before, but i really think that he'll be replaced by cox very early on.
as for pavano, i find it hard to believe that the yankees will keep him. he's ostracized himself from the rest of his team, and all the reports, as positive as they are, just don't instill much faith in me. i agree with rich in that cashman will trade him only if the other team picks up all of pavano's contract, and i think if pavano proves his worth in ST, some team desperate for pitching will do just that.
I think Bruney can throw strikes. Nardi said they saw something really simple about him, that they were able to fix in Columbus. He should now have a full ST to get used to the better mechanics they showed him.
his WHIP was 1.40 last season... granted, it was a small sample size, but he walked 15 in 20 innings! the 25 K's were more a byproduct of having to face more batters per appearance and consequently getting more chances to K batters.
maybe he can get it together this season and be effective, but we also have to keep in mind that AZ let him go last season, and they're pretty good when it comes to talent evaluation. he was injured and they were growing impatient with him, but if they really thought he had potential to help them, they wouldn't have let him go, especially considering he's so young. also, i love nardi to death, but he's high on every pitcher if they're wearing pinstripes.
steve goldman agrees with me, for what it's worth... he thinks bruney will be one of the bigger disappointments of next season

High comedy from the inimitable Michael Kay:
Kay - But...but...It doesn’t matt...I again I tell you I understand what you’re saying that it’s a function of a team but I also say it’s a function to a...You’re a Yankee fan right? They scored eight runs he gave up six...they won, so what....he’s a veteran pitcher that knows how to pitch to the score so his ERA is going to be higher. It doesn’t matter. All that matter is if he wins and loses.
Chris - Any pitcher who gives up six runs a game under your scenario would win 17 games.
Kay - Pitchers pitch to the runs they are given. Good pitchers do that.
Chris - That’s not true. Pitchers are going out there to give up the fewest runs possible.
Kay - No. If the Yankees score 8 runs in five innings he’s not going for the shutout
Yikes. Cairo is back. But he's cheap and cuttable.
torre loves him... there's no way he'd get cut (unfortunately)
