Yanks Make Their 40 Moves

The Yanks had to protect 40 players today, and apparently couldn't find any trades that made sense. So, they bit the bullet and released Jacoby Ellsbury and DFA'd Greg Bird and Nestor Cortes Jr.   Ouch. Not on Ellsbury which we warned them not to sign, but Greg Bird had the makings of the great hitter, but couldn't get his feet right. We'll see what happens now.

The Yanks chose to protect: Estevan Florial, RHP's Nick Nelson, Deivi Garcia, Luis Gil, Luis Medina, Brooks Kriske and Miguel Yajure.  Presumably, the new pitching braintrust had some input on these decisions.

So, the first big offseason hurdle has now been passed.  Let's see how the rest of the plan comes together.

UPDATE: Chris Gittens, Kyle Holder and Alex Vizcaino were not protected and should get grabbed.
