This Week on the Blog
Alright, nutty week for the Yanks, full of highs and lows and ending with another Severino Gem. Giants will play their firs tomorrow, and the Ranger kids have already played two at Traverse City. Oh, and Melo is still a Knick. Let's see what this week can offer.
Giants: The Giants have the makings of a great season - if - and only if - they can get the offense back to 2015 levels or greater. Theyhave a great D and will need to be able to run and possess the ball to keep that D fresh. And we don't yet know if the Giants will have their #1 weapon tomorrow. OBJ looks like a game time decision, but unlike last year, the Giants have Brandon Marshall, Evan Engram and a year two Sterling Shepard to rely on if he can't go. Also, the backs can catch. As can the other three TE's. So the Giants should be okay passing it as long as the OL can keep Eli upright. And of course the Cowboys get to play their girlfriend beater, because...???? Sickening,
Yanks: Tyler Austin had a big hit today, and Luis Severino continued to dazzle. The Yanks need a bit more for Judge, Sanchez and Bird if they have any dreams about this season. That said, it's probably too much to put on the young guys, especially, when they have a manager who is challenged by the art of proper pitcher deployment.
Also, they did finally sign Ronny Rojas today, which adds another potential high upside switch-hitting SS to the mix.
Rangers: The Ranger Kids blew a two goal lead last night and were down 1-0 late today. So they realy are future Rangers. But it is good to get them some experience, and camp should open rigtht after this tourney. Still no trade for a C.
Knicks: Krisptaps is hanging 27 or 28 against every country he plays. Meanwhile, Melo still hasn't been trade and their camp isn't too far off. Do they really want Melo at camp? We'll see.
Go Giants, and have a great week everyone!

Tanaka is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.
Could not hit the glove at all last night, and barely threw it far enough to cross the plate.

Sachez is the most dangerous hitter on the team.
Judge disagrees, and notes I misspelled Sanchez.
It's a blowout, but not a well managed ballgame. If we can get Sanchez and Judge going and have some other guys to help, we might just go far.
OBJ inactive. Probably for the best.
I hope Engram gets a lot of touches.
If they could just get Bird going...
Reese is a joke.
Two offseason OL additions. One is waived and is on the practice squad, the other didn't dress.
Eli often didn't even have a pocket.
The running game was worse than awful.
This shit is unacceptable.
Clint back. I will be pleasantly shocked if JoeG plays him much.
Also, that Collinsworth would single out Engram despite the OL sucking, was comically stupid.
And PFF grades are bizarre.
Still more Todd, no Clint.
Clint was pretty bad on his rehab assignment.
Hope Bird comes back strong.
This is interesting bp mgt. Short term, great. Beyond that, very risky.
Good of Girardi to bring Robertson in when he did.
Only three games out in the division, though I still don't think the division is a realistic goal. Four-game lead in the wildcard standings is nice.
Sherman
Robertson rejoined the Yankees on July 19 with Todd Frazier and Tommy Kahnle in a trade from the White Sox, and Kahnle was the piece most desired because he was having a breakout year, is still young and is low paid. But there have been moments when Kahnle has had some Jay Witasick in him, looking like a guy who succeeded outside the bright lights and big city and who has had the game speed up on him here.
I am fine with using a closer/reliever early, I hate the idea of a closer assigned only to the 9th. I just think the length of the outing was a bit much.
Art Stapleton, who I usually view as way to deferential to mgt, is tweeting a very different tune.
https://twitter.com/art_stapleton/status/907606352222212096
I like Art on twitter, he engages fans and typically argues his views. I tend to agree here, it's now 18 games with a below average offense with McAdoo calling plays.
It angers me that McAdoo is trying to put the blame on Eli for not converting third downs. Anyone who watches the game knows that an aging, immobile quarterback could get broken in half if he holds the ball too long waiting for his second and third option is to develop.
We have had to watch about five years or so of this abomination of an offensive line.
So the reassurances aren't very reassuring.
Clint tonight
Can they get Gray some run support?
I have a feeling that Gray might be our co-ace next year. Health of he and Sevy providing.
But not tonight, because he just got careless and gave up another jack.
Has he always been HR prone?
Playing in Oakland and the AL West was more forgiving, but basically a ground ball guy, who, like David Cone sometimes experiments too much.
Ridiculous loss.
Thanks
Curry: 8 NYY starts, in 5, 0 or 1 run scored by the "offense."
Pay $25 to see offense, I guess you get what you pay for.
Supposedly Otani is coming to MLB.
So it's about a sell job:
1) young upcoming team, albeit with a shit manager
2) probably Tanaka as a teammate
3) significant Japanese cultural concentration including a Mitsuwa in Edgewater, New Jersey
4) The chance to earn significant endorsement money
Hosmer could be his teammate as Yanks like him.
Pass.
Some team will give Hosmer 7+ years, so agree, pass.
If in a year from now, we are still having the same conversations about Bird then it's time for another solution. But a large part of the reason he missed so much time this year is because he was misdiagnosed.
It's more on the Yankees than him.
I cannot knock Girardi for pulling Garcia. He has been bad overall.
Betances is still a problem
This is why you didn't want to use Robertson for so long in game one
It's great that they won, but even with having two of his three closers pitching well this manager shits the bed every chance he gets. If Chapman faltered they were putting in Shreve. Are you freaking kidding me
Glad they won despite a pathetic showing by the offense. The Yankees are going to have to revamp their pen this offseason and build it around Robertson and Green.
Didn't watch the game, what were Girardi's issues?
I think it's strategic. In other words, when you pitch Robertson so long in game one, while being aware that Betances has been struggling, you're bound to run into issues over the rest of the series, especially as you say because the offense struggles with getting big (many?) hits.
Kay thinks he panicked by taking Betances out so soon. He doesn't handle pressure well.
Girardi's not gonna have enough relievers left for a play-in game, let alone a series or two. Reminds me of the later Torre years, when he'd kill every reliever buy Mo.
If Betances didn't know where the ball was going, which at least one person I follow on Twitter said was the case, Girardi was right to pull him.
The problem with that is if Chapman continued to falter in the 9th, Shreve was coming in, which is suboptimal. And Chapman's PC was over 30, so if his overuse last year by Maddon has hurt him, and less use lately has refreshed him, that doesn't help him continue to recover.
http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/page/nbarankporzingis/why-kristaps-porzingis-soars-nbarank
http://es.pn/2wrbGA1
Kristaps Porzingis and LeBron James are in an elite club. They're the only players in NBA history to amass 1,000 rebounds, 150 made 3s and 100 blocks in their first two seasons. The list of players who've compiled 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 250 blocks and 100 made 3-pointers in their first two seasons is even smaller.
It's only Porzingis. That's it. Maybe it's that unique profile -- a never-seen-before blend of height, shooting and shot-blocking -- that has landed Porzingis at No. 22 in ESPN's #NBArank. Does he deserve to be ranked in the top 25 at this point in his career? That's certainly up for debate. Porzingis is surrounded by the likes of Klay Thompson (19), Gordon Hayward (20), Mike Conley (23) and Blake Griffin (24) on the list. Reasonable people can disagree as to whether he deserves to be in the same sentence as those stars. His numbers last season were solid (18.1 PPG, 7.2 RPG) but not spectacular.
...
imagine if they ever surround him with real talent, or the young talent they now I have is what they hope it is.
They're going to honor Stick before tonight's game. It's ridiculous that they didn't do it while he was alive. They put up plaques for players that were pretty good but not great. He was much more than that. Whether it's Hal or Levine or someone else who makes these decisions, they failed The Yankees were spinning around a toilet bowl until Stick changed everything.
They seem to either score a bunch or scuffle.
Sanchez set the franchise record for HRs as a catcher. When you consider the Yankees' history, that's incredible to me.
Sanchez set a record, Judge joined more lists that only include Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle and DiMaggio. We have two historic young hitters.
