Yanks Sign Matt Holliday

The Yankees, continuing their tradition of signing guys who had offered them discounts years before, finally signed Matt Holliday today.  It's said to be a 1 year deal worth 13M.  In other words, about what they wanted Beltran for.  He'll probably get all the chances at DH, knowing Girardi, but this also means they won't be spending their #17 pick on Encarnacion.  So, it was an imaginary need filled for just cash. Still would have preferred to see them float the kids through DH on their half days.

About 8 years too late. They need to rethink their DNA (a Hal-ism).

At least he'll be good in the cllubhouse if the kids actually do need a mentor.

Like this move. He's cheap, short term, great character, can still hit. If a young player takes and needs AB's he can sit, if McCann who was younger, bigger salary, played a prime position can sit for a guy like Sanchez, Holliday will certainly sit for whoever. Also as you said, so far we keep our draft pick.

I don't hate it because it's not that big a deal. I just think it's a waste.

A "whatever" move for me. Just hurry up and trade Gardner.

At 4:27 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

A few weeks ago, I had thought he might be s better option than Beltran, but then saw his splits were much worse. Looking again, he was better in the 2nd half and better away (strange).

So did his August broken thumb prevent a 2nd half regression to the mean or was his first half an anomaly?

At 4:35 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He had a couple of injuries last season. Somewhat Beltranesque. Both guys wanted to be Yanks as 27 year old FA's. Alas. I think he fits an imaginary need, but he's always been a favorite of mine. Let's hope he's more Beltran than Brian Giles.

What's the holdup with Chapman? Hal?

At 4:49 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Probably the new CBA and the market more than Hal.

At 5:03 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

He wants a lot of money and years for a reliever, so if Melancon (no pick either, right?) is a much better value they should consider it.

At 6:46 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Holliday at least is a good OBP player historically. I think being a DH will help, as will being away from St. Louis's home stadium.

At 6:03 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The more I think about it, the more I can get behind this move. I would rather have gone young, but I think Holliday could be good here, if he can stay healthy, which was the same issue with Beltran.

At 8:05 AM, Blogger Michael said...

The biggest upside I see is in the clubhouse leadership. From all accounts he's a locker room leader.

At 8:47 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I think that depends on whether or not last year's production was an anomaly because of injuries. Last season was his first season with an OPS+ under 120 since 2005. So he's probably not the 135 or so OPS+ guy he was in his prime, but he may still be significantly above average again if healthy.

I'd like Napoli too but he supposedly wanted multiple years.

At 11:34 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Melancon, 4 years $60-$65m (SFG)

At 11:46 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Hill to the Dodgers for three years. Glad Yankees didn't bite on that one.

At 12:12 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Chapman wants 6 years, which I think means he really wants five, but I think five is too much.

At 2:14 PM, Blogger Billy Martin said...

I love Chapman but the volatility around RP is too high to give out 5 guaranteed years, let alone 6. When you factor in he's a guy whos effectiveness is strictly reliant upon velocity, there's a lot of risk involved.

I would steer clear if it goes past 4 guaranteed.

In regards to Holiday signing, there's absolutely no risk involved here. He will be good insurance for LF/1B and play primarily DH, which should allow him to be a good middle of the order bat now that he doesn't have to play the field. On a 1 year deal that doesn't cost any picks, there's no reason to complain as the intangibles he'll bring to the clubhouse cannot be quantified. Fostering a positive clubhouse environment will be critical to the development of the prospects we bring up and Holiday's work ethic and leadership will be necessary.

At 3:39 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I agree with Billy. No real risk in signing Holliday.

Didn't feel this way at first, but I'm starting to think I might be OK with the Yankees signing Jansen instead of Chapman even considering the pick. As Billy noted, Chapman relies heavily on velocity, whereas Jansen is a cutter guy, so he might age better.

At 4:02 PM, Anonymous Steve said...

I'm hoping it's Chapman with an opt out like Melancon. Hopefully if that's the case Yankees would have learned their lesson that an opt out is a good thing and let him walk after paying for just the good years of the deal.

At 5:39 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The risk, if there is a budget, is the opportunity cost imposed by the $13m contract. So if a better younger player became available, they might not have the money.

At 5:40 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I would not give up a 1 for any reliever for a rebuilding team.

At 6:41 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Hoch: The Yankees have fielded "a number of different concepts" involving LF Brett Gardner, Cashman said. So far, they've said no to all of them.

At 7:35 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Jon Heyman

Yanks are focused on 1st Choice cHapman, Jansen is also being talked to. NYY won't do 6 yrs, but 5 seems safe bet now.

At 7:59 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I wonder what the offers for Gardner are because I wouldn't want that much if they take the entire contract

At 8:43 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

I'd like to see some super-ninja trades of Gardy and Headley.

At 9:55 AM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

I doubt they'd get much back. Teams aren't desperate for B/B+ players with several years remaining on their contracts at this time. Put another way, I can't imagine a GM saying "Chase Headley will win me the World Series" in December. Perhaps in July, if his 3B goes down for the season and he has no good replacement on hand.

OTOH they could do a straight salary dump, but they won't be getting people like Torres and Fraser back.

At 9:58 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The ninja part could be using the money elsewhere more productively.

At 10:10 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Just saw that they retiring Jeter's number. Too bad people, fans, the media, etc., regularly obscured his defense of shortcomings. Because his career should serve reminder to Cashman and Girardi that offense wins.

At 10:25 AM, Blogger TB said...

Looks like Red Sox got Sale. Not on "Sale". Moncada and much more .... I'm ok with this, think he's heading into possible injury situations in the near future. Too many innings and funky high stress delivery. I didn't want him on the Yanks!

At 10:27 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

That's why we can be skeptical about spending on Holliday or a long list of veterans. The money should go to the Moncada types.

At 10:30 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The Yankees are too far away to make that kind of trade. They probably will in the future as these prospects develop and sort themselves out.

At 10:32 AM, Blogger TB said...

Lawyer, make no mistake. Harper is in the Yankees sights. Once he hits FA, the Yankees will have a team of controllable, low salaried players and be easily able to bring in Harper + others to lead the way! Our time is coming, just need a lil patience.

At 10:35 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I agree, lion.

btw, I was driving this morning and heard some host on WFAN said there was a rumored Harper trade, well don't know team was mentioned Probably bs but just throwing it out there.

At 3:13 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

“The preference, yes, would be to retain our draft pick if possible,” Cashman said. “We know that Chapman pitched in New York. I don’t believe that Jansen would have any issues pitching in New York either, but it’s nice to have that box checked, too. They’re both exceptionally talented individuals and they’re both going to be well-rewarded for that talent regardless of where they decide to play. It would be nice if somebody picks us at some point. If not, we’ll adjust.”

At 4:15 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Sign Chapman and call it a day.. I agree with Lion, Harper will be the focus in 2018, and we should be ready by then.

At 4:16 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Sale is not a good locker room guy, Sox went for it

At 5:51 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Per Feinsand we have offers to Chapman and Jansen... could we get both??

If the choice is between overpaying Chapman or trading for Robertson, I'll take the former.

Yanks now have the #16 pick because the of the Nats signing.

Kalel, you mean the Rockies signing Desmond? right...that was odd to giveup the #11 overall, especially since they have a loaded outfield already.

http://www.businessinsider.com/ap-boras-says-labor-deal-will-turn-latin-players-from-baseball-2016-12
OXON HILL, Md. (AP) - Agent Scott Boras says baseball's new labor contract will cause Latin American players to turn away from the sport and play soccer.

The deal agreed to last week places limits on bonuses for players who reside outside the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, restricting teams to signing pools that start at $4.75 million for the year starting next July 2.

At 2:35 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

More:

"When we're making $10 billion, should we really build the Berlin Wall to youth? We just cut off the American players and limited them well below the NBA and the NFL, and now we're doing it with the Latin players, as well. We're cutting off our soil. Because now I would imagine FIFA is over in Venezuela, 'cause they've coveted South America, and they're building soccer fields as we speak in the Dominican and there because these athletes are going to turn to something that is better for them."

Chapman returns at 5/85........ I hate going over 3 years. Let's hope he stays healthy

It's better than stupid trade, so I have to like it

At 9:34 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

There's a full NTC for three years, and another limited one for two years that says he can't go to any California teams.

There's also an opt-out after three years, so let's hope he's dominant for those three and some other team is dumb enough to sign him after he uses it.

Make no mistake, this was a Hal Steinbrenner production. Liked the buzz Chapman created at Stadium (among the few to do so).Wanted this done

I called this a while back, except I attributed his eventual re-signing to Levine, but it was for this reason. Gotta market whatever you can I guess.

At 4:36 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I like the opt-out from the team's pov.

At 4:38 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Also lawyer we kept the pick, so it's a win in that sense 😊

At 5:47 AM, Anonymous Stottlemyre68 said...

I agree, it could have been a whole lot worse. We keep #1 round pick. Thanks to opt-out we save a year on the back end and some $$$. Our pen is strong again, enabling us to baby developing starters. Plus, thanks to having rented out Chapman for 3 months, we get Chapman, Torres et al, plus Castro for Jageilo and Rookie Davis. That's pretty good wheeling and dealing.

At 6:20 AM, Blogger TB said...

Funny how players don't want to play in California, Chapman and Holliday (Oakland). The thing about Chapman's impact is that he doesn't necessarily make them a whole lot better but can help if we are good enough to get him leads late in the game. If we are not good enough to get him leads, his impact is minimal. So, we have to be somewhat good to allow him to make an impact.

I like this from a standpoint of not making us temporally mediocre with an older, declining, everyday free agent on a long term contract. You have to either be good or bad, bad gets you more opportunities to get better younger players which makes your future better. Being good affords you the opportunity to "attract" future free agents and make it an option to trade for players to take you to the next level.

Chapman wanted to come back and I would not be surprised to hear he took less to come back. We keep the pick, possibly could get more "assets" for him in the future. Good deal!

At 6:25 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

The reason I like keeping the pick is because at 16 you can still get a really good player who falls, like like Rutherford, or even...Trout.

From a Davidoff can column;

For better or worse, it’s Hal Steinbrenner’s belief, in tribute to his father’s legacy, that a team should always have at least a chance at winning it all.
---

It's kind of a misreading of history. They won it all in the 70s because George exploited free agency dad to supplement Gabe Paul's great trades. The ability to exploit free agency in the same way no longer exists.

The other time they were able to win championships was because they didn't try to win it all while George was suspended.

Our Role V pain is the result of upgrading the farm system so drastically last summer and fall. I would hate to lose Torrens and can't believe it would be good for his development if he sat on a big league bench for a whole year. The flip side is that with Sanchez coming through as a future star, Romaine showing that he can hit well enough to be a strong backup, and Higgy showing huge potential, there was no place for Torrens to go except as part of a trade, and even there his value isn't that great at present.

I'm also a bit sad to lose Hensley. The poor kid sure was snake-bit, wasn't he?
