This Week on the Blog

Alright, so the Ranger are good all over, the Knicks are good at home and terrible elsewhere and the Giants have been muddling on as we all wait for their offense to ignite.   And the Yanks still haven't done anything stupid in awhile.   Let's take a look at what's coming up.

Giants: The Giants face another must win game against the Bengals in a couple of hours.  Every game remains a must win because they dug themselves an early season hole by losing three games, two of which they should have won.  If they have improved they should win tonight, but that will be tough without Justin Pugh, who's grading out as the best OG in the league this year.  He's gone for the next for or so.   Also, Cruz doesn't look like he'll go, so we really need Sterling Shepard and a TE or a back step up to help Eli and OBJ in the passing game.   Sterling has to trust his speed.  That's something Jim Skipper spent two and a half years teaching Tiki to do, before his career took off.   Sterling should get there sooner.

Rangers: The Rangers are good, and though we've felt they'd trade for a pucking moving D all year, who would you trade?  All the kids are excelling, and they can't aford to trade anymore picks for the foreseeable future.  They have one more game on their sojourn to Western Canada, and should have Bouch back, but not Kreider who has left the team for further analysis on his neck.  So they'll probably call up a forward.

Knicks: People are getting really impatient with the Knicks. Sometimes they've looked like a playoff team, while other times they've looked like the Knicks.  In any event, they're still figuring out how to play D, and Noah's defensive acument and leadership hasn't really shown up much yet.  But it's a long season and kids like Billy and Kuz and starting to look like rotational steals, so that's fun.   And KP still isn't getting the ball enough most nights.  Hopefully, they'll figure things out.  Both Rose and Jennings have shown why the offense could end up being quite formidable.

Yanks:  I don't think that the Yanks have added Enns to the 40 yet.  They should.  And the only upshot from the GM meetings was that the Yanks want pitching and may be in the market for a DH/1B.  I'd rather have the kids take all the at bats, and I've never understood the utility of an Old DH.  Why not have a young DH or young kids splitting DH while they approach and get into their primes.  They won't be missing at bats that.  Oh, and meanwhile, Gleyber Torres might be even better than we thought when the trade was made.  Oh, and Kap seems healthy and still has the velo he's picked up the end of his junior year and the beginning of his pro-career.   The injury didn't dull it.

So let's get a Giants win tonight and exhale.  Wishing you all the best of weeks.

Especially in these ridiculous times we live in, it's great to have your sports teams win as a diversion. So that's great. The defense is improved, Landon Collins is a star, but the construction of the offensive line is inexcusable, and has negatively affected Eli's career, but there is no accountability.

It was a big win. And the Knicks continue to get it done at home.

Six wins is six wins. I agree with LINJ about the offensive line. This may be the Cowboys' year, but finishing ahead of Phila and DC and making the playoffs wouldn't be terrible.

PS -- Happy 75th to Mel! I hope he's hanging in there.

On The positive side, sitting Donnell has been huge. He is beyond awful. Merely having semi-competent TEs out there has made a big difference.

I met Mel and Bill Momboquette (sp) at a Ford dealer in Elmwood Park, New Jersey about a billion years ago.

Speaking of Chapman, what is the 17th pick in the first round worth in dollar terms?

According to this, the 30th pick in 2014 was worth $6.7 million. So just pulling this out of my butt, let's say the 17th pick three years later is worth $15-$20M.

If that's even close to being true, and again assuming they have to have (for good reasons or bad) a name reliever, maybe Chapman is worth $15m more than Jansen, even assuming that their skills are the same, when they may not be.

We cannot give up the 17th pick, because if the pool system doesn't get better, we'd lose all the pool money of the 17th pick and lose a lot of our ability to wiggle through the first ten rounds, so we'de be getting many more seniors than would necessarily be optimal.

Very true. And it would be for reliever, who really owe Mo some money because his success, in the context of a great team, has skewed the perception of their importance.

The Rangers' success has been stunning, at least to me. I hope they stand pat.

In other words, if any moves are made don't get older and don't trade picks.

The Giantsvery marginal to terrible offensive line depth is even thinner now.

Nice win (they all are at this point) but their perimeter defense is terrible.

So are the sibling the problem or his Hal merely spinning?

Asked whether he regretted trading reliever Andrew Miller to Cleveland, given Miller’s success with the Indians, Steinbrenner said, “My family wouldn’t talk to me for a couple of weeks. That was a sensitive one. … That was a tough call. But when you have the ability to get the four players that we got, of that caliber … it has to be a deal that good to consider getting rid of a guy like that.”

For two pitching prospects. Good move. I just hope they leave the DH spot open for the kids to get at-bats.

Both prospects are supposedly flame throwers.

Abreu is supposedly 93-97, touching 99 with a plus curve and promising changeup.

Guzman is a lottery ticket --- sits upper 90's and will touch 102 but is raw.

I like it.

Rosenthal
#Astros view both right-handers headed to #Yankees as legit prospects, but a good bit away. Guzman "tremendous arm strength but raw. "

I'm glad they traded him ( I wish they never signed bim) although it may mean Beltran's probably coming back. I don't like one guy taking all the DH at bats

As for what they got I honestly don't know.

Anyway, right now I'm looking for distractions, so in that regard, yes

The 'stros are spending, signing Reddick and looking for a big starter in a trade. The Yankees arent in that position yet.
