This Week on the Blog

This was kind of a crappy week for the Giants and Yanks, and a more encouraging one for the undefeated Rangers and Knicks.   Yanks season ends tomorrow, and then the Giants play Monday night.  So they have a chance to right things.  Anyway, the Rangers will continue to get ready, and the Knicks will start their preseason games on Tuesday.

Yanks: The Yanks lost the ability to make the playoff when Baltimore beat Toronto the other night, and played like they were feeling it last night.   Hopefully, they'll just play the kids today and tomorrow, which I believe will be Tex day.  Word started leaking out that the offseason plan will be all about pitching.  Since there are no good FA pitchers that is worrisome indeed.  They cannot start trading their top prospects just because they finally have some, and would be much better off using next year as a testing ground for Severino, Mitchell, Cessa, Enns, Montgomery and the guys who could be ready by mid-season.  Anyway, with the memory of trades for young "studs" like Jeff Weaver and Javier Vazquez x 2, the Yanks should really think long and hard (and effectively) before acquiring another young "stud" at the cost of actual young studs.

Giants: The Giants are doing the things that undisciplined teams do.  The PF's are ridiculous and were also an issue under TC, so many of these players need constant reminding.   That, and a dishonest replay official, cost them the game last year.  Monday, they play the Vikes, who have looked great on D.  There's no way for the Giants to beat them if they keep playing like they have been, and with injuries on the DL and at S, they might not have enough healthy bodies to get it done even if they show discipline.  However; whenever we're supposed to beat the Vikings, we lose, and whenever they're favored to beat us, we win.  So we've got that going for us Monday.

Knicks: Reports have been a little mixed coming out of camp, as far as style of play goes.  The ones and twos apparently look great in Horny's breakneck transition game, but, the new guys especially are having trouble picking up the intricacies of the Triangle in the half court set.  We'll see how this plays out.  KP spent the offseason strengthening his legs and core, and is up to 240.  Be afraid, other teams, be afraid.   Kuz and Willy also seem to be having good campsbut we'll have to see in the games.

Rangers:  The Rangers play again today, so far there's a problem brewing with the Forward group.  Pavel Buchnevich will go back to the KHL if he doesn't make the team.  Thus Vesey and Pirri are sort of competing for one spot.  And though Vesey is the more exciting prospect, Pirri has scored 3 times in two game. Vesey is the only one of the three in tonight's lineup.  This is another situation to keep an eye on and another reason we could and should still see a trade for Trouba or another D.

So there we are. Yanks hotstove starts Monday, and the Giants must win that day, too.  We get to see the Knicks on Tuesday, and I really hope everyone has a great week, around these games and happenings.

Why can't Sevy treat a start like a relief appearance, at least in the early innings?

There is no way he should be this bad as a starter. I hope he doesn't end up as yet another poster boy for the Yankees' inability to develop SPs.

Austin has come on of late. They need to free up the DH spot next weekend by trading some of the excess on the roster so he gets at-bats next year.

Intermittently encouraging, but just words for now.

I think Austin has shown he needs to start somewhere for the Yankees.

Re-sign Chapman (it's inevitable so we might as well accept it), trade Gardner, McCann and Romine (allows Higashioka to come up as the backup), extend Tanaka and otherwise allow the farmhands to fill out the rotation.

Makes sense to me...

Trade Romine while is value is high and maximize the return.

Look into Lourdes Gourriel when he holds a showcase in October.

I would rather let Tanaka opt out..that elbow is a ticking time bomb for TJ surgery.

When is Ohtani getting posted, and would they bid to win?

No pass rush, all season.

Embarrassment. Seems like they're aren't prepared. Penalties and turnovers, out of control.

Hey everyone, wanted to let y'all know my dad passed this morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. Since you all have had me and him in your thoughts/prayers, I wanted to express my gratitude for those well wishes. Thankfully, having no regrets in terms of my relationship with him makes this much easier to swallow, as does the fact that he didn't have to suffer at length.

Funny story, he was a big Yankees/Giants fan, and he called me after the Giants won Super Bowl XLVI and told me he and my uncle had gone in on a pool and won several thousand dollars by betting on the Giants. Glad to know their most recent Super Bowl win gave him a little extra happiness.

Sorry to hijack the thread like this, and let's hope both of those teams get it turned around and bring more enjoyment to fans like my dad.

Cashman, on trading half the farm for a No. 1 starter (doesn't sound likely):

"I would be hard-pressed to do that," he said. "I think that we have spent a lot of time and effort growing to this level, and I think that type of deal would be a deal where you are that final piece away (from be a World Series favorite). I think that we have an exciting young nucleus that’s coming. Some of it has arrived, some of it’s still coming, but there are some flaws in this roster still. There’s not a flaw, there’s (multiple) flaws because of it. That doesn’t mean we can’t compete for a postseason berth. That doesn’t mean we can’t be some team that can play deep into October.
"But the type of concept that you’re speaking of – I’m sure the name, everybody knows who you’re talking about by asking that question – but that, to me, if you’re an organization that’s one piece away, and you back the truck up with four or five players to finish off, you’d have to be one piece away. And I would not recommend that type of decision making as we approach the 2017 season. I think that would be a dangerous approach."

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. He's gone, but certainly not forgotten.

Reading the interview, Cashman really does seem to want to give the young guys a shot en masse. He may have no choice but to trade some of the vets, as Girardi seems hesitant to play rookies at times unless they storm out of the gates like Sanchez did.
