Knicks Deal for Rose, Cut Wroten

The Knicks today traded Robin Lopez, Jerian Grant and Jose Calderon to the Bulls for the Ghost of Derrick Rose, G Justin Holiday and a 2017 2nd rounder.  This marks the first time in Knick Cap history that they didn't not gratuitously send a package of future ones for a non-savior player.  Rose was of course, the league MVP in 2011.  But since then he's blown out an ACL and dealt with confidence issues.   Holiday is a placeholder who has not distinguished himself.

Though I was willing to trade Lopez, an Elite Rim Protecting 5, I was hoping it would be for a young, long term piece or pick to go with Kristaps.  Alas, that wasn't to be.  Jerian looked like he forgot how to play basketball last year, and I cant believe we got to unload Calderon.

The good thing about Rose is he turns back into cap room at the strike of midnight on 7/1/17.  He should also discourage the Knicks from handing out a longterm deal to any of this offseasons flawed PG class.

The Knicks also cut Tony Wroten.  So two guards enter, three guards leave.

Now we have to see what the rest of the plan looks like.  I could start tomorrow night at the draft, or sooner, if the Knicks have another trade to make.

As of right now they need a 2 and another 5, as well as improved depth at all spots.

They said on ESPN radio this morning teams below 3 are willing to move picks. They said it's a real poor draft...Your thoughts

It's a flat draft where the teams with the best scouts and player development make out the best.

As I mentioned on the other thread, I like it because it gives them a look at Rose, increased cap room next year when there will be a ton of free agents including Westbrook, and if Rose stays healthy, the opportunity to rehabilitate the Knicks/MSG's image.

Oh, and maybe it also means that they're going to play more up-tempo, most of the time.

I like Herring, but this deal does not do this at all:

But if anything, Hornacek’s arrival has seemed to embolden the Knicks’ desire to upgrade the point-guard spot now, as opposed to waiting until the summer of 2017, when more top-flight point guards are set to become available.

I like it, will miss Lopez and I think Grant will be a good one eventually. If we could get a couple of good FA's, think we are a playoff team.

Shocked we GET a draft pick back for next year, which is good. I agree the good scouts will find good players in this draft, I believe we have very good scouts!

Howard is a FA, not sure he fits the mix of players we have ..

Another thing to remember, as a group, Melo, Porzingis, and Lopez were a very slow front line. But no Howard

This is news about Atlanta possibly looking to trade their 2 #1's

Marc Stein - Back to Hawks: Sources say they'll now try to trade their two first-rounders (one from the Teague deal) to make re-signing Al Horford easier

Could be a team the Knicks will talk to ..

Why cut Wroten? Unless he is not healed yet, and the Knicks medical staff feels his leg is a "blow-out" waiting to happen, why let him go?

I suppose this also means Galloway is coming back.

And, who is the big in the middle? KP is not yet strong enough to bang around for 30 minutes a night. Don't tell me O'Quinn is the answer - I am not impressed with his defense at all.

Before his injury, Rose was among the best penetrators in basketball. After a slow start last season, he improved after the calendar turned to 2016, improving his scoring (from 14.4 points per game to 17.7), field goal percentage (from 39 percent to 45 percent) and finishing around the hoop (from 45 percent shooting on drives to 55 percent).

I'm pretty sure Willy Hernangomez wil be playing some C for us next year. I'm not really interest in Howard coming in and am flat out against making KP a 5.

I wonder if we'll be in on Derozan, assuming Durant ain't into it.

DeRozan is the guy I'd like the Knicks to get! rumored to be interested in the Lakers though ..

Will I/we live long enough to see the day when the Knicks are the most favored destination? I'm not sure.

Lawyer, seems Rose had the Knicks as his #1 trade landing spot, have the best doctors to keep him together.

Thanks, I'm thinking of the truly elite though.

If true, I don't get this:

Woj on his podcast says teams are stunned by how much the Knicks gave away in the trade.

Hm, I was not aware of this...should have gotten a bit more then from Chicago, maybe a #1 pick (instead of a 2nd) or maybe another 2nd,

"The Knicks aren’t just getting a perpetually injured former NBA MVP in the blockbuster deal that will bring Derrick Rose to New York − they are also getting yet another player mired in scandal. A former lover identified as “Jane Doe” claims in a lawsuit filed last year that Rose, 27, and two friends drugged the woman, entered her Southern California apartment and gang raped her in August 2013."

It's not what you want to see, but it's a civil case, so it would seem that based on the higher reasonable doubt standard, nothing untoward took place, according to prosecutors.

I think having a lot of cap room next year is a really important part of this deal.

As much as some people criticize it because the Knicks aren't doing the methodical rebuild, they don't have a first this year and they have to find a way to make this an attractive place for free agents.

Also, Billy is right; they would have 35m or so in cap room this year if they renounce the rights to their own free-agents.

Chicago media is saying that other teams wanted the Bulls to include a first rounder in the deal because he could walk after the season.

Melo to Rio. The Zika risk is his to assess for himself but the last thing his body needs is more wear and tear. So this is messed up, imo.

Hahn: this trade is getting them a meeting with Durant on July 1.

Players now want to play here.
