This Week on the Blog

This week was another bad one.   The Giants lost in the final two minutes of their game, the Rangers lost a bunch, the Knicks lost a bunch and the Yanks may not have a plan, and continued to trade talent for questionable talents.   Oh and the Knicks just won one and the Rangers just lost in OT.

Yankees:  The Yanks so far this offseason have traded useful players like Murphy, Warren and Wilson for players with questions like Hicks, Castro and the two AAA pitchers they got for Wilson.  I have no idea why they settled for Cessa and Green for Wilson given what's being handed over for proven relievers this year, and I have no idea what the rest of the plan is, but it had better be more impressive than this has been.

Giants:  The Giants should be 10 and 2.  They're 5-7.  That's massively problematic.

Rangers:  The Rangers are in a tailspin, and most of it can be tied to the play of Dan Girardi and Marc  Staal.  In fact, at one point this past week Dan Girardi had been on the ice for 8 straight goals against.    He gave one away too Johnny Gadreau tonight, too.  It's time to sit Girardi or send him on a conidtioning assignment.  And they have to call up Skjei and see if he can provide some stability, like McIlrath is doing.    This has been ridiculous.

Knicks: I think Porzingis was 0/6 tonight and didn't play down the stretch.  Way to develop him, Fisher.   I don't care if the Knicks win or lose this year, I care about how they develop the pieces that might be worth keeping.   Zinger got screwed tonight, but O'Quinn finally got some burn again and was 14 and 7 last time I checked.  I don't like how Fisher is handling this, and though I don't care about the record, I hate watching them blow games, and they, like the Giants, have a knack for that.    Oh well.

So this week, let's hope the Rangers can start winning, the Knicks can start developing, the Yanks can make smart moves and the Giants start playing out their streak,

I hope everyone has a better week than our teams are likely to.

Yay win, but Grant didn't play either. Fisher may be Trottier on the Rangers bad. He has buried talent like Williams and O'Quinn. He is offensively bad.

Great point on Zinger. PLAY HIM!! We have sat through worse with Melo this year.

Putting in Vujacic for late game defense is to fail a hoops IQ test.

How did someone at the NYP ever decide that George King was qualified to write about baseball?

How difficult is Cashman’s job to find a reliever to handle the seventh-inning assignment as Warren and Wilson did last season, knowing the Yankees’ need can best be satisfied via trade?

“We will see,’’ Cashman said Sunday. “It could come organically or it could be a combination [trade or from within], We will see.’’

A free-agent market that provided former Yankee Shawn Kelley with a three-year deal for $15 million is better left alone. The days of giving Steve Karsay four years for $21 million and Rafael Soriano two for $21 million have vanished one year after Andrew Miller landed a four-year pact for $36 million.

Adding to the degree of difficulty for Cashman is that he isn’t inclined to part with prospects Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Jorge Mateo, Luis Severino and Greg Bird, who have limited big league experience.

So, can a second-tier prospect bring back a major league reliever in a time when teams are hell-bent on putting strong pens together?

Yanks have a ton of guys who can handle the 7th, though, as you know, that's not how I'd run a bullpen. I'd do it by leverage and not by inning number.

I agree with Phil. If the real bad boys are coming up in the 7th, bring in your best to face them. In conjunction with that, Phil, what do you think of the idea of at least sometimes using Miller and Betances in tandem (i.e. let one of them go for 2 innings or 1+) rather than in series as they do now? I would think it would be easier on them and you would always have at least one of them available.

I suspect that, with the advent of fantasy sports, Rose cannot be reinstated as a business matter. A manager would have loads of opportunities to manipulate a fantasy result if he wanted to and if it happened all hell would break loose. Therefore MLB has to send an unequivocal message that any involvement in gambling on baseball will not be tolerated at all. Otherwise the sport will lose all credibility.

As a player, Rose no doubt belongs. But so does Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose conduct was far less egregious than Rose's and who was at least as good a ballplayer, according to the old timers.

I think they should put him in the HoF while continuing to ban him from everything else.

Kristaps Porzingis may have been fatigued on Saturday but he doesn't think that he's hit a rookie wall. "A couple of bad games, it happens to all of us. Not only rookies. I m just looking forward to the next game," he says, adding, "I don t really know what a rookie wall is." Porzingis has averaged 5.6 points on 24% shooting in his last 3 games and said his legs lacked strength on Saturday night vs. Portland, which makes sense. Last season in Spain, Porzingis played 1,072 minutes in 50 games. He's on pace to play 2,238 total minutes this year.

Grant buried Leaves O'Quinn in with 2 1st Q fouls, gets 3rd

Good 1st half though

I know I point out deficiencies in various NY sports mgmt because many are being run suboptimally, BUT Fisher is at another level of abject incompetence.

Not only did he leave O'Quinn in with 2 fouls in the first quarter, he left Lopez in its 4 in the third. Both promptly picked up another. Neither has the skill set to play easily in foul trouble.

Vujacic is back in the rotation and he may be a worse player than Fisher is a coach. He defends worse than Calderon, if that's possible.

The are currently, almost exclusively, a jump shooting team. Grant is one of the few players who drives the lane, and Fisher is destroying his development.

Porzingis may be a little worn out because right now he is staying on the perimeter too much, but he is blocking shots and rebounding. But run plays fo him in the post.

Melo was great tonight, and shared the ball. Affalo was very good as well.

Sometimes guys look over their shoulder and it becomes different to play and be relaxed.

Joey G talking about his new second baseman. He never seemed to care that Refs had to do the same thing, And Joey G was the reason for it

So they are giving Castro the job maybe because they think Refs might beat him out if given the choice

Hicks and Castro may or not turn out to be great, but it's the same old shit. If they trade for you you get an opportunity no matter what. If you're one of their own ...

“I think when you look at Hicks, he has an opportunity to play a lot just because of the importance of keeping guys fresh,” Girardi said at yesterday’s holiday food drive. “He has the ability to play anywhere. He’s extremely athletic. He’s a center fielder by nature. He’s a switch-hitter, so it’s not a guy that you would necessarily think about pinch-hitting for. It’s a young man I believe has a lot of talent, and he has a chance to thrive here.”

Jennings has some stupid ideas.

• The Yankees could use a corner infielder, especially one who could play third base occasionally. Could Chris Johnson be a fit? Johnson was designated for assignment by the Indians today. His contract looks pretty awful — two more years and $17.5 million guaranteed — but the Yankees could target some sort of trade with the Indians picking up a large chunk of the money. Johnson can play first and third, and he’s remained at least a useful hitter against lefties (sometimes a really potent hitter against them).

They would be better off trying Refs as backup at 3B. The objection to his power doesn't apply to a backup, and he's shown pretty quick reflexes on line drives at least.

I didn't realize it until he came up, but he's a pretty strong kid.

And btw, This manager has been willing to play Ryan at 3B...

Yanks are adamant in saying Bird is a 1B. Asked him if he'd take stab at another position to get at bats, he said, "I'm open to anything."
