This Week On The Blog

Okay, this past week saw a lot of the same crap we've seen all fall.  The Rangers underperformed, the Giants lost yet another game they should have won,  Zinger won rookie of the month, the Rangers continued to slump, and the Yanks sat on their hands.

This week should be a bit more interesting around here.

Yankees:  The Yanks didn't do anything other than non-tender Domingo German, who''s apparently still injured and whom they hope to get back, like they did with Campos last year.   But while they were not doing much, they crawled up two draft spots when Shark and Grienke signed.  And believe it or not, that's great.  Now as long as they keep the pick and other teams keep signing the compensatory free agents, the Yanks will keep moving up and adding money to their draft pool.  Neato, isnt it?

Possibly bigger still, the Yanks will head to the Winter Meettings this week and that seems to be where they like to finalize trades these days.   Gardner, Nova and Miller have all had their names mentioned, and hopefully if they do complete trades, they are for young talent -- and don't entice the Yanks to go out and spend on a free agent because "money became available after we traded Gardy and Miller," or some nonsense like that.   They have to make good trades and keep the picks to have a successful  hot stove season.   Let's hope they do.

Giants:  The Giants have sickened me this season. I just `15 version of the team.   They literally could be 10-1 if they could have finished 4 games and started one other.    They're pathetic.  And I don't now what will happen from here on out.  They could win out and go all th way, or they could pack it in and go home.  What I hope they don't do is to win enough to create false hope, or jeopardize their draft position.

Knicks: The Knicks are fun to watch, but only when Porzingis is in. They play again tonight and have a chance to get another game over .500.  Unlike the Yanks and Giants, the Knicks have no picks to jeopardize by winning games.  So even though they are a few pieces away, they should learn to win and win as much as possible now.   And the way to do that is to feature Porzingis.  The other night they lost an overtime game, that Melo missed, and where Porzingis only took 13 shots and that's ridiculous.   They need to feature their best players, not just one of them, and never Lance Thomas, which the second unit has been doing as their level of play has declined.

Rangers:  The Rangers should bounce back once Kreider, Hayes and Miller start finishing.  Also, they are in the processing of Posada'ing some prospects, like Brady Skjei, and interestingly enough, a player named Girardi was the roadblock in both cases.  Still, if the Ranger D's continue having problems moving the puck out of their own zone, it should be Skjei time and not at the expense of McIlrath.

Have a great week everyone!

I think it's obvious from Cashman's comments that he wishes he had the money to sign Price.

We'll see what happens.

The Bucks are comitting assault all over the place tonight. Knicks better pick it up.

http://nypost.com/2015/12/05/brian-cashman-predicts-yankees-winter-meetings-strategy/

As for second base, Cashman said Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder are the plan. Yet, the Yankees don’t have blinders on when it comes to that pair’s faults. Defensively, they are below average. Ackley’s upper-cut swing from the left side is made for Yankee Stadium, but he is a career .244 hitter in parts of five big league seasons. And there are questions if Refsnyder will hit enough even against lefties in a platoon situation.

— Additional reporting by Ken Davidoff

Three goals

1. Trade Ivan Nova: Getting a younger and cheaper starter is ideal.

2. Find an upgrade at second base: Dustin Ackley and Rob Refsnyder are short defensively and questions at the plate remain.

3. See what the actual market is for Brett Gardner and Andrew Miller: Would be crazy to deal Miller.

It's the post, they're idiots

At 8:45 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I will flesh out why this 2B upgrade thing is dumb.

Every freakin veteran on this team has significant and increasing flaws yet the media morons and anyone who believes them conveniently overlook that.

And unlike Refs and to some degree Ackley, they are much more likely to get worse rather than better, and unlike a young player, their stupid contracts crowd out roster upgrades because the sunk costs of their contracts prevent adding payroll. Young players, otoh, provide savings to upgrade the roster.

So really, spare me the 2B upgrade idiocy.

Sign the Cuban OBP Jesus second baseman as insurance. Otherwise, I agree. No need to make a move there.

At 9:19 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

What is his likely price? I think 2B is one of the few places they don't need an upgrade. 3B is their most glaring need.

At 9:49 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

He's played some third, though scouts say his arm is better suited for second. Still, I would sign him, stick him in AAA and have him play both positions. Not sure on the price.

At 9:57 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

My reluctance would be if the contract mandates playing time. Almost every starter they have plays because of their contract rather than their ability and no one more than Headley. That's why I want Ackley at 3B. He had been ridiculously bad at 2B, but Headley's defense was pitiful. Yet we only hear about Refs. That's why I get so frustrated with the moronic double standard.

At 10:26 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Headley has been known to be a solid defender at 3B but had a bad 2015.

Ackley has never played 3B so that wont happen.

Fernandez should be the guy to get for 2B as he has an adequate glove.

At 10:45 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Reviews of Fernandez's glove at second have been mixed, Bob. If we want "adequate," then Refsnyder should suffice if his offense translates.

Headley was a mistake signing, and that became apparent outside of like two weeks after the ASB. He needs to be gone as soon as an alternative presents itself.

At 11:19 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Has be known to be < Reality that he now sucks

At 11:31 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Think about this. People like Bob prefer a declining veteran who has sucked in the present based on the fact that he was good years ago over a young player who is showing continuing signs of improvement.

This mindset has led to one of the worst rosters, dollar for dollar, in MLB.

At 11:46 AM, Anonymous Bob said...

Until a better option comes around for a 3B it will be Headley until his contract is up.

To say plug Ackley at 3B is far from reality.

Your really is thatvsucky veterans rock

At 2:39 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Bob,

My hope is they sign Fernandez, Refsnydef proves himself at second and Fernandez takes over third. I agree Headley is there until a better option presents itself, I'm just hoping one does.

Still pissed at this fucking find an incredibly nauseating way lose with regularity team.

At 8:53 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

“The biggest thing is finding out what your variables are as you enter the process and then you strategize from there,” Cashman said. “Because we've had prior commitments that we've made, there's a certain way we have to go about our business right now. And that's okay. There's nothing wrong with that."

Nah, who could possibly think there is anything wrong with being hamstrung by a bunch a terrible contracts.

I hope to sleep in, and I wonder if I'll miss our first trade of the Winter Meetings if I do.

We definitely need some positive NY sports news.

At 7:44 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Jack Curry: For a long time, Cashman has told teams he won't part with elite prospects. Teams who have spoken to him recently said that hasn't changed.

At 8:19 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

John Morosi: Sources: #Yankees interested in free agent Asdrubal Cabrera to play second base but continue to say they have tight budget. @FOXSports

Ew.

At 9:10 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

If true, what a phony. I read a quote yesterday that he wants cost-controlled players at any position.

Refs and Ackley are better a baseball that Cashman is at anything.

And again, the worst players on their roster don't play 2B.

At 10:06 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Been up for half an hour, still nothing.

At 10:08 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

I am really not asking for much. Stop signing shitty veterans at any price, trade veterans for younger players that have the hit tool, and let Refs and Ackley compete (aka the American Way) for 2B.

At 5:41 PM, Anonymous Bob said...

Jose Fernandez...Love to see him in pinstripes but it would cost all of all top guys to get him.

The pitcher that is and not the 2B.

This is one of the most misleading headlines you can ever read

At 6:08 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Cuban said he loved the Knicks draft. He said the Mavs would have taken point guard Jerian Grant at No. 21 if he fell. He also praised the Knicks second-round pick center Willy Hernangomez of the Spanish League who is expected to join the Knicks next season. … Fisher played a 10-man rotation for the second straight game. Kyle O’Quinn got his third straight DNP. Sasha Vujacic and Lou Amundson also didn’t play.

At 7:27 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

Bryan Hoch: The #Yankees have reached out to free agent catcher Tyler Flowers. They're interested in having him serve as Brian McCann's backup.

Remind me to always take with a grain of salt the idea this team would actually give a young guy a shot.

At 7:52 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

dear lord, make it stop. All we're hearing is they are looking to replace Sanchez and Refsnyder and may trade most of the others for a 23 year old pitcher in his injury matrix.

At 10:13 AM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

‏@JoeFrisaro
The #Yankees were willing to deal Severino in package w/ #Marlins for Jose. Belief NY doesn't have enough, even if included Bird.

Just play the kids this year. They won't be any worse off for it.

At 10:26 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

This is such BS, it's unfathomable.

i want a position surprise

At 2:25 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So no news. I have no idea what's going on. It does seem like they don't like playing young players without any ML experience.

More specifically, whatever their respective ceilings, both Didi and Hicks spent a while floundering in the ML. Refs has never had that chance, nor has any other young OF with higher ceilings than Hicks, nor has Sanchez.

Maybe that's offbase, but what is so wrong with giving Refs and Sanchez at least a part-time opportunity.

Again, yes, I am down on Cashman, but I would rather have him make me wrong, that's painfully right.

Thank goodness he didn't come to block Sanchez.

At 4:22 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

So the only thing that can save Cashman from his worst instincts are other general managers?

At 4:46 PM, Blogger Mike in Mississippi said...

I didn't realize Castro was owed almost $38M over the next four years. Yikes.

At 4:47 PM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...
