Yanks Offseason, Pt.2

We got into this a bit during the regular season, but as the season ends, the Yanks' 40 Man Roster is still a big problem area, and it's currently being compounded because all of those guys on the 60 Day DL will come back on it and place their number at 46.   Of course, the pending free agency of players like Drew and Capuano will help a bit, as will non-tenders and DFA's, but they will now have to make trades in order to turn the 40 back into asset protection mode by the time the rule 5 draft occurs in December.

So we're probably going to see some 2, 3 and even 4 for one trades in the offing.  And because of that, we will probably still have to part with some talent, that will would have been able to keep, had the 40 not gotten so screwed up.  The trades will probably start in November.

Why do expensive veterans without no trade protection have to be on the 40 man?

IOW, assuming Cashman remains the GM, and he has gauged the market on Headley,Beltran, McCann, etc. and, for argument's sake, finds no takers without ridiculous (at least to Hal) subsidies, why protect them?

Either some team wants to assume their contract, and that would be great, or if not, that's a 40 man spot.

I don't see the downside as long as there is no prohibition in the CBA.

Another issue is whether or not they seek to extend Pineda, buying out his remaining arbitration years? I think it's really risky, but if they can get an extreme discount in exchange for some security for him given he hasn't pitched a full season in almost five years, then maybe it would make sense.

I would trade Pineda. We'll see what happens.

And their probably is something in the CBA which prevents players who aren't on the 40 man roster appearing on the 25 man roster.

I hope a rule is the only reason they don't, and I am not against trading Pineda.

Speaking of aging/declining, while I was on the rower earlier, I heard Mike F. mention that Girardi said his team ran out of gas. Mike said the team is too old, and Betances pitched too many innings.

That exacerbates the point I referenced on the other thread. The knew the team was done, but refused to ruffle feathers by playing many of their young options.

Where is the accountability?

What is going to be done in the offseason to pare the roster of these aging players?

So far, it seems like there is neither a cost nor a remedy for the incompetence.

Imagine if the Yankees had traded for Price and he shat the bed in Game 1? They never needed pitching any way.

And how the f did they give Choo five minutes (slightly exaggerating) to make a decision on a contract? He was such a better fit than Ellbury, who could become so hated here he may have to retire (joking, but...).

The mistake was signing all three of the guys they signed (not including Tanaka with that) instead of keeping the picks. Choo is a nice player but I'd rather not have him locked up for seven years.

I would include Tanaka (given his career IP) but my point is they were going to sign FA because they have sucked at development, and Choo made more sense. Even if it's only regression to the mean, mayve that's changing, as long as they don't let veterans block them. They have a great opportunity to get out of this mess if they have the balls.

I could live with another year of Girardi if it was made clear to him that everyone needed to be on the same page when it comes to giving youth a chance. That doesn't just go for position players, either — Lindgren will be back next spring and needs to be given an extended shot, as does Nick Goody, who I think has back-end-of-the-pen upside. I also think there needs to be a plan in place where guys like Betances and Shreve aren't worked to death.

It's obvious, at least based on those quotes, that he's acting as a mouthpiece for his higher ups, who I do get the sense want to give young guys a shot.

Even if they were going to rebuild, Tanaka is a guy you pay big bucks for, given his age and the fact that he only costs money. I've said in the past they should have done the same for the likes of Darvish and Cespedes, and they need to do it with Shohei Otani when he becomes available.

Back in 2007 or 2008, when it seemed like Hughes, Joba, and IPK would soon form the core of the rotation, Cashman said that the days of spending massive money on free agent pitchers were over. He knew that development was preferable to free agency. Obviously, that was a false start but perhaps the current wave of young players is real and will be enduring. That is the model I hope they follow. It is working very well for the Mets right now.

As for Girardi, it's apparent that he and Cashman are on the same page most of the time. I think it's time for fresh eyes, even one pair, but it's not happening.

The Mets should have retaliated for Utley's takeout last night.

Wallace Matthews goes from rightly saying the Yankees are old inexpensive and unlikely to be better next year, to proposing solutions that would make them even older and more expensive. What a fucking idiot

Some maintain the idea that surgery makes a person stronger in the area operated on. From everything you read, it's not true:

Dr. Mark Adickes – ‏@jocktodoc

Odds of tearing ACL 1:1750. Once you have an ACL tear, odds of reinjuring repaired knee or the opposite healthy knee increase to 1:33.

The only solution is to let the youth take the team as far as they can, wherever that may be, and see if there are any takers on some of these contracts in the next couple of years. Smart acquisitions/signings can supplement that.

I agree, and beyond that don't add any more multiyear contracts veterans, and really don't add any veterans over 30 if it costs young players or if it blocks young players

I see some recommending the Yankees require Prado.

Unless they are going to dump Headley and let him play 3B for a year, why? He isn't going to change what they can do next year in any material way.

Also, I saw Jenning say that McCann's contract would be the easiest to move but they shouldn't do it because he provides left-handed power and the pitchers love him.

So what? That is where they are deep that is where they can shed salary to redeploy

That is the type of small minded thinking that is the opposite of what this franchise needs at this point in time.
