Yanks Lose

The Yankees today passed on Yoan Moncada for less than the pocket change they throw at crap like Drew and Capuano.  They really don't get it anymore, and that's on ownership.  They had a chance to add an elite talent to their collection of good but not yet and perhaps never great prospects and not only did they pass - they let the Red Sox get him.

It seems that every time they do something right - like sign Tanaka, or take the top off the market in IFA - they do a bunch of things wrong - like blowing 3 first rounders on Beltran, McCann, and Ellsbury, or passing on all the Cubans, or passing on Yu Darvish.   There are times when they seem to have a plan, an other times when they seem to be rudderless

It will be another 2 years before the Yanks can go after the top of the market IFA's.  In the meantime, they'd better keep all of their draft picks and hope they get lucky.

The Yanks were tested today, and they failed.

It's simple. If a player can't help them today, they aren't interested in going all out.

If Hal wants to go cheap, do what the Wilpons did and be patient while people skilled at development slooowwwllly build you a team.

This GM has proved that he can't.

But he's a "YES man" and that's what they value.

This franchise is in decline and will remain there, until this f'tards sell.

The Yanks won't be able to be big spenders for the next 2 IFA -- By the time they can spend, I'm willing to bet we have an international draft in place that won't even allow them to do spend big.

Cashman told Barbisi that they made the offer yesterday and were told it wasn't good enough. Clearly, they were given the opportunity to raise the bid but OWNERSHIP wouldn't spend more.

I don't see how anyone but ownership should be blamed here.

This was an ownership decision.

The baseball people loved Moncada.

Although I said in my first post on the other thread that it was primarily on ownership, everything is part of a context. It's not like thee ML roster is stocked with young talent, or any really, in terms of offense. So who is that on?

And as much as he was once known to fabricate stories, George King had this spot on, sadly.

I said the way to get this done was to blow Moncada out of the water. It didn't matter who his agent was because of Moncada's uniqueness. It's not like if you don't sign Lester you can sign Scherzer.

Can we stop hearing that Hal is a financial guy or a good businessman?

He was good at one thing: picking a rich father.

No, this is yet another time when ownership said no to an advantage because they didn't feel like spending the money.

It's happened with every notable Cuban.

This is just really disappointing. Fact of the matter is, we can sit here and point fingers but at the end of the day, we are just wasting time complaining over something that is not going to change.

Worst part of it all is he goes to the Sox, who were already LOADED with young hitters in Boagerts & Betts.

Guess I'll be having a double for lunch.

Again, ownership sucks, but the problem with the franchise runs deeper.

Ownership has balked on every big money Cuban. They have fixed a bunch of the other problems, liked dvelopment, but turning down talent hasn't changed.

Moncada suggested he'd like yanks. Makes sense since path to majors looks better. Bosox have pedroia 7 yrs, Pablo 5

As Phil said, the difference equated to what the Yankees paid Drew and (ugh) Capuano. And as Billy said, by the time they can spend big again, there will be an international draft anyway.

I will still pull like heck for this team, but ownership has now completely lost me. LINJ is correct: They only spend big if it helps the major-league team. Their logic, I'm sure, is that they could spend that kind of money on an established player. Well, who exactly do they have in mind that's going to reach free agency on the right side of 30?

The Steinbrenners are, quite simply, not dedicated to being great — just good enough. Cashman's past comments about not building the "perfect beast" are probably a reflection of that more than anything.

Phil, I remeber you rpost like ysterday when the rumors where the Yanks would trade Hughes for Johan. You wrote like father like Dumb. There is no way to say it this is mindnumblingly stupid. I guess we are gonna harken back to the days of Ken Phelps, Alvaro Espinoza, and 1/2 full stadiums. Yankees wont be able to compete for some years now. Boston, Toronto, Baltimore got better, and Tampa always finds ways to get better. Would a last place finish in the division shock anyone?

Maybe they should sell the rest of the team. LINJ got it right, while many of us dislike Dolan, he would not have lost a player over money.

The more I think on it, the more bewildered I am that this happened. I mean, how can you be so incredibly shortsighted?

The one positive from this is it shows Hal for what he truly is — a cheap owner who doesn't understand what it takes to build a great team in the current baseball climate.

Question is, do enough casual fans care to cause an uproar?

Caahman said they were told yesterday to make their best offer and they did.

That's why you blow a player away if you really want him.

I am just an idiot like most people, but even an idiot can see that.

The Red Sox are poised to be dominant. It's an inescapable fact.

I hate it, but reality is what it is.

I watch less games every year. Thankfully there is Netflix and HBO GO.

Yet they are perfectly fine to pay the difference to the likes of Drew/Capuano/Esmil Rodgers/Chris Young.

That, in a nutshell, is what's wrong with this franchise. They overspend on filling out the 25-man when you could just plug minor leaguers into that role for the league minimum, all while passing on high-end amateur talent for the same amount.

At 10:04 AM, Blogger Lawyer in NJ said...

Yup, that's it.

Rooting for them is becoming an exercise in cognitive dissonance.

@AndrewMarchand
There was a feeling from some that Moncada wanted to be a Yankee, team viewed it as too risky to spend a total of $60M-$70M for a prospect

It's funny how ownership is so convinced there will be guys worth spending that much on that hit free agency. In reality, it will be guys who are past their prime that the Yankees pay for their decline years — the Yankee way.

LINJ,

It probably just makes us masochists. :P
