Yanks Hire Three New Coaches

So the Yanks have added Jeff Pentland as their hitting coach, Alan Cockrell as their asst. hitting coach, and Joe Espada will move from being a MLB Scout for the Yanks to being the infield coach and presumably the new 1B coach.   The best hitting coaches in system still appear to be the in minors. We'll see if Espada can get Refs and Pirela up to speed.

Gary Sheffield is a big fan: http://nypost.com/2014/12/24/yankees-hitting-coach-candidate-gets-a-500-homer-endorsement/

"It’s almost like he is in there with you as far as what pitch the pitcher is throwing,’’ Sheffield said of Pentland. “He knows what your strengths are, and he wants you to keep to your strengths as opposed to the pitcher’s strengths. He works on that with you in the cage, and you can’t find a better hitting coach.’’

One major complaint in recent years by fans is how the Yankee hitters don't appear to have a plan of attack when facing pitchers. If he can help in that regard, great.

Ultimately, though, it's likely going to come down to the fact that much of the lineup is simply too old to be as effective as we'd all like.

Drew is our 2B... For now. Refs needs more time at AAA

The problem is, his hitting doesnt need more time in AAA. Let him learn at the MLB level in what will likely be a down year anyway.

So after a few errors at 2B costing some games, the NY media and fans will eat him alive and ruin his confidence

Drew will be the SS. Watch.

Stop with the defense bullshit the offense may suck again.

I think Ref's getting rep's at AAA is the best move for him and the team.

He may be more ML ready than Gregarious ever will.

Defense matters and you cannot give up extra outs with this pitching staff.

You can't win games 15-14 every night

Gregorius will be given every opportunity to play SS

Again, who cares? This team isn't winning the World Series this year anyway. Let him adjust in a down year. That way, if the team is in a better position a year from now, he will have already gone through the growing pains and would be more used to MLB pitching.

Whether Refs and Pirela start with the Yanks, or not, they will be up at some point, so they'll need a good teacher as inf. instructor. And the tied that is upon us over the next few years will be kid after kid.

Once Moncada is on board, Refsnyder will be playing in another city.

LOL lets hope that's true and if we are going to just go all offence then let ARod play short. Sounds crazy but from what I've seen of Ref's at second Arod would do no worse at SS.

In other words, you just don't like Refsnyder and don't want him getting a shot.

Should the Yankees sign him, Moncada will likely play 3B if he can't stick at short.

Moncada will probably be a CF for the Yanks.

Mike I like Ref's bat but I think putting him at second from what i saw last year in August wouldn't benefit him or the Yankees. Lets see how ST goes.

It is kind of amazing that people can watch baseball and not understand that the most important, and increasingly the most scarce, tool is the hit tool.

If you don't have it, unless you have a stacked offensive team (the Yankees have the opposite), it's hard to be anything more than a bench player.

If you have it, defense really doesn't matter that much.

So really, this discussion with anon (assuming that he is the same anon continually going on distorting the importance of defense) is ridiculous.

Gregorius is 25. He hasn't been able to stick as a starter because of his bat.

Maybe that changes. But if it doesn't, it will be yet another indication of the importance of...the hit tool.

And in a nutshell, this is the primary reason that I think Cashman's continued tenure is a tremendous mistake.

This is the Bronx F'ing Bombers, yet they don't have one impact offensive player on the team. He has added two of any real note in 15 years: 1) Cano, and he gets full credit for that; and 2) A-Rod, who was a salary dump.

That is an abysmal record when you spend $200m every year for over 10 years.

You should be able to develop a few more, even by accident, or trade for a couple, or sign some.

Nope.

I agree with some of your take but if were all about offence alone why not just take the 9 best hitters and fill in the spots.IMO pitching plays the larger role in a winning team.y

It's hard to answer that without some context, iow, how good is good (impact, league average for the position, etc.), and maybe more importantly, they don't have many good hitters so the issue is moot.

But Jeter was never good defensively, Bernie was never great despite the gold gloves, Giambi wasn't good but could get on base like few others, A-Rod struggled here at 3B much of the time, and so on.

All of them, however, were significantly above league average offensively for their position for large parts of their career, and that's why they were all near HoF, or in Jeter's case, HoF, talents.

There are pitchers that can play that kind of role, but, as a group, they are so fragile that imo, it's imprudent to spend a lot of resources on them.

As per Andrew Marchand Willie is out as a coach. too bad

I read on some board that some one said maybe they wanted to go with a younger guy than Willie, and a person replied that they could have made Willie the batting coach and saved 8 years. ;)

I really wanted Ref to start at 2B, if he showed in ST that he can handle it OK. Maybe this removes the pressure from him, by Drew starting and Ref coming up later.

Also, maybe Hal wants Ref off the "Super Two " list, so keep him in AAA until mid-to-late May.

Finally - maybe Drew replace Ryan as the backup middle inf.? Now, wouldn't that be something!!
