Yanks To Look at Yasmani Tomas This Weekend
The Yanks are going to the showcase of Cuban corner OF, Yasmani Tomas this weekend. It's impossible to know what they're thinking about any of the big ticket Cubans, because they've stayed out of the market. Of course, that's been a big reason for the dip since 2009, but they don't seem to see it that way. We'll see if this guy moves them to spend.

I have to think they won't sign a big money Cuban until they actually do, but from their perspective, it would enable them to keep their extremely valuable picks, contrary to the last offseason.
But I expect them to sign a big name "stahtin' pitcha" because pitching wins...oh wait.
As I have said, more than spending money, they key to their success over the next couple of years could be for them to show a willingness to sit declining players with monster contracts.
They are already stuck paying them, so why get screwed twice by enabling their terrible production to contribute to more losing than is necessary.
Obviously, they have done that with Jeter as he has severely declined, but there are no more iconic players for them to fear offending.
"A seventeen percent strikeout rate doesn’t sound particularly onerous, but it is bad by Cuban standards. Tomas has routinely been near the bottom of the league, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to expect him to be in the vicinity of 30% in the bigs. He hasn’t made up for it with his plate eye, either. His walk rate is below average, and nearly a third of those have been of the intentional variety."

Given that this guy is likely to command around $100 million, I'm not sure he's the guy you break that kind of bank for. The Yankees, as usual, would be entering this market far too late, when the cost is high, when it could have had the likes of Chapman, Puig and Soler for much less.
Moncada is the one I think they could go all in for. He could be Cano-like.
I agree completely on Moncada. Hope he makes it to the market before the next IFA go-around. Otherwise, no way the Yankees could sign him.
If you can give McCann $85m at 30, and Beltran $45m at 37, I think you have to take fliers on young talent.
The notion that the Yankees have unlimited funds is demonstrably false. Consequently, those contracts are likely the very reason they won't, unless they project Tomas to be Giancarlo Stanton. (And I've read no reports that indicate such.)
The problem with Moncada is no one knows where he is -- Power is at an all-time low so I expect a lot of teams to bid big on Tomas. His body scares me but I think there's more upside here that we shouldn't sleep on.
Problem is, he sounds like a Wily Mo Pena clone. Not sure that's worth forking over hundreds of millions on.
Sounds like O'Brien, whom we just traded for Prado.
The idea is that they should spend whatever they have on young talent with upside rather than veterans with mostly downside.
Foolishly if he ends up blocking Refs, or if it limits their other spending.
Moncada is younger than Refs and if he's better than Refs, how would that be foolish?
I was referring to Prado. I think he will be the 2B.
George King says the Yankees weren't even in on Castillo.
