Yankees Win Despite Girardi

Esmil Rogers gave the Yankees a terrific 5 inning spot start, allowing just one run in the first.  The Yanks themselves scored 5 runs in the first, and when Carlos Beltran hit a grand slam a few innings later it looked like a laugher.

Side note: If the Yankees had signed Beltran when he offered them that discount during his prime, they would have won more rings.  At least two or three.

Anyway, the Yanks had scratched Bryan Mitchell -  the same kid they wouldn't trade for Dustin Ackley last week and forced them to trade for Prado - yesterday with the idea that he could supplement Rogers today, should anything go wrong, or in this case, very right.   The Yanks had an 8 run lead, and it was time to finally pitch Mitchell, but instead Brainiac brings in Huff.  He gives up a run and must be relieved by -- Mitchell?  No, Kelly.  He gives up more runs.  So does Warren.  Then Hill stops that and we're down to a 4 run lead.  So in a game where he had an 8 run lead, he ends up having to use Warren and Betances.   Holy crap.   They should have traded Mitchell for Ackley (who is red hot) if they had only know that Girardi would never use him.  This is the third time,

In other bad news, McCann got a concussion.   They have to protect him here, so they'll probably call up JR or Romine.    But Goodspeed to McCann and his recovery.  Those are pernicious injuries and things can get complicated.

We face their ace tomorrow, and Warren and Betances have already been used tonight.

Wait... He seriously didn't go to Mitchell? What the heck?

Just looked at the box score — goodness, Girardi and his trust issues. It's a good thing Betances has been lights-out all season long. Otherwise, he'd have been given a one-way ticket to Scranton just several weeks into the season.

Nope, third time they've called up Mitchell and not used him. So Mitchell is off his schedule.

Just plain terrible managing.

And we're gonna have a really short bench with Tex and McCann unavailable but not on the DL.

We used to talk about Torre-proofing the roster. It is time to Girardi-proof it. Better yet, get someone here who isn't enamored with gritty, untalented players like Roberts and the pitchers he uses over young talent.

One major problem with the payroll is that it builds reputations of untalented people.

He basically destroyed the Marlin's young arms.

He might do it again.
