Giants Draft: No Man's Land
Well at least it's starting today. Back in the classic era of NFL draft coverage they'd do the first three rounds on a Saturday and the last 4 rounds on Sunday. That was ideal. Especially so, for the Giants of the 1990's and early '00s, when they were blowing a bunch of first round picks-- you wouldn't have to sit with it overnight like we will if they pick Taylor Lewan or someone else they shouldn't today. No, it the three round days, you'd just have to wait several hours and they'd get another player -- usually a better one.
Fortunately the Giants have gotten better at picking first rounders, strangely though, for the first time, basically ever, they've gotten a little inconsistent wight their second rounders - Austin - Sintim - Moss. Yikes. We'll worry about that tomorrow, though, or after tonight's pick.
At this point I think they will either pick Odell Beckham Jr. or Zack Martin. Taking either would attack a significant issue (the OL, replacing Nicks) and land the Giants a very good player. But the problem tonight could be that the Giants find themselves in No Man's Land at 12, with both Beckham and Martin off the board. In that case, I think it would be acceptable to take Mosley or Shazier, but I would much prefer trading down and taking Joel Bitonio, then using the extra pick in the second or third to really clean up. They can't afford to blow the pick.
In general I do think there will be some trades. TV broadcasters hype trades every year, but they are usually few in number with more on day 2 and 3. This year, because it's deep in quality and there are a number of QB's involved, I think we will see teams trading, maybe even starting in the first round. Houston has been thought to be auctioning their pick for awhile.
