Giants and Free Agency
Starting this weekend, the Giants can start talking to other teams' free agents, then Tuesday, they can start signing people. They have many more holes on their roster than usual, partly because of some draft busts, but mostly because 25 of their own players are FA's. They seem to be focused on getting Beason re-upped, but then will let their other FA's field offers before trying to re-sign them or letting them go. Earlier today, they resigned Mark Herzlich to an undisclosed deal. Of course, he might not make the team, but they do need some place holders for some of these holes.
Obviously what the Giants must focus on first and foremost, both now and in the draft is the offensive line. They need both starters and depth. I think they'll look at the guys from the Chiefs, and maybe Brandon Albert, because he's versatile. But they definitely have to come out of this period with 2 OL's.
Unlike many other teams, the Giants haven't done anything to create extra cap room yet. That's probably wise because that way agents can't go after a bigger part of the pile than the Giants want to use. But they have some moves they can make to free up money, so don't worry about that. They haven't had cap trouble since before Kevin Abrams showed up, and they won't have it now, even with all of their holes.
It will be interesting to see just how much of their needed rebuild the Giants can get done in this single offseason. Let's wish them luck.
