What Now?

In a bit of a surprise, Cliff Lee has spurned the Yankees to return to the Phillies. Oddness. Anyway, this leaves the Yanks short in the rotation. It's really important that they don't blow up the farm and trade guys like Montero, Betances, Banuelos or Sanchez to try bandage the rotation. Betances and Banuelos will be ready soon enough, and bats like Montero and Sanchez just don't come along very often. We'll see what happens.

Agreed, but with Martin now in the fold, and the Yankees' willingness to trade Montero in the past, I think it's a matter of time before he's shipped out.

I hope I'm wrong. Would you sign Brandon Webb?

Unless it's for a Josh Johnson caliber/age pitcher, that would change my opinion of Cashman.

They were only willing to trade Montero for Halladay or Lee. And that was while they still had time to find another catcher of the future. I doubt they trade him now.

I know some say Yanks should call Seattle about King Felix, but why would they deal him now, unless Yanks majorly overpay...

At 8:59 AM, Blogger Michael said...

taking a flier on Webb certainly cannot hurt, the Lieber move paid dividends, and Webb has higher upside then Lieber did imo..

At 9:12 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Rich, that's the idea. Josh Johnson/Felix Hernandez/etc. Not for anything less than a proven ace in his 20s.

I say take a flier on Webb and throw money at Pettitte for one more season.

At 9:13 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Michael, the idea is that Seattle won't be competing anytime soon, and the Yankees can offer blue chip prospects for him. Allows them several more years to draft and rebuild.

At 9:14 AM, Blogger Rich said...

I agree, Mike.

I didn't want to trade Montero for Halladay, and especially not for Lee, although they obviously disagree.

At 9:30 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Mike you make a fair point. The same could be said for Florida and Johnson. Of the two whom would you rather have? Given the prospects we have to give up would be similar. I wonder how much bad blood Cash has w Seattle, and would they even deal with the Yanks? One would suspect Cash would make calls to both Florida and Seattle??

At 9:32 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Rich you would be in favor of King Felix or Johnson, if so whom would you prefer?

At 9:40 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Cash just said in his conference call that plan B is patience.

At 9:41 AM, Blogger Michael said...

I think they should strengthen the pen.. I maybe in the minority but have always been a Rafael Soriano fan, and would love the Yanks to sign him

At 9:58 AM, Blogger Rich said...

Michael,

King Felix because he has no significant injury history.

At 10:00 AM, Blogger Michael said...

that's whom I would pick as well for the same reason.. As Cash said on his conference call the prices now will be extremely exorbitant.. This is one of the exact reasons you build up the farm in the event you need to make a trade for a stud like the King

At 11:18 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Would also prefer the King, for reasons aforementioned. As far as dealing with the Mariners, they probably did the Yankees a favor by not letting them trade away Montero for what would have been a three-month rental.

Just get Buerhle and ask Pettite back.

At 1:50 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

King Felix would be perfect, but I'm not sure the Yanks will be doing business with the Mariners any time soon.

At 2:29 PM, Blogger Rich said...

One year of Buerhle better be very cheap or forget it.

A B prospect.

At 2:57 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Buerle for Joba?

WS need BP help.

At 3:29 PM, Blogger Michael said...

Yanks signed Prior to a minor league deal

At 6:03 PM, Blogger Rich said...

I don't want to trade Joba.

At 8:53 AM, Blogger willmart said...

No reason for cash to rush into a trade right now. He has a lot of money to spend and in order to do that, he needs to map out possible targets, disgruntled players, etc.

The yankees can take on payroll at the cost of giving up lesser prospects. If Andy comes back, we still have a good 3 SP, 1 wild card, and 1 unknown.

Getting a Josh Johnson or Felix Hernandez will likely gut the farm but how about someone that will cost a good prospect but still leave us good? I'm talking Francisco Liriano. He ABSOLUTELY dominates lefties and is goign to become relatively expensive to the twins soon.

At 9:06 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Liriano will cost us alot.

How about a salary dump in Zambrano?

At 9:16 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

I'd be OK with Liriano if he could be had for a string of B prospects, but I doubt Bill Smith can get away with trading away another lefty for chump change.

I like the Martin signing, and as already mentioned, I'd go after Soriano now that the Yankees have money to spend. Bobby Jenks on a one-year deal would be great too.

At 11:15 AM, Blogger Michael said...

Mike I am a big Soriano fan and have expressed my support for him prior, and hope it's something they explore.

At 3:12 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Soriano wants 15MM a year.

Get Wood and maybe call Cleveland and offer Joba and Nova for Carmona.

At 3:38 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

You don't always get what you want.

At 7:01 AM, Blogger willmart said...

If the twins called and asked for Betances + Laird + Warren to Liriano, you can't possibly say no to that can you?

At 7:45 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think the key is for Pettite to return.

Hughes will be a year better and AJ cannot be as bad as he was...His stuff is too good.

I am concerned that Cashman will use the Montero trade chip. Martin has been told that he will be the every day catcher. I hope he has a bounce back year but I don't want him to keep Montero out of the big leagues. If they were to use Montero in a trade, I wanted it to be Halladay. King Felix, maybe. Nobody else.

At 3:00 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Red Sox got Jenks, whom I wanted, but not for two years. And according to Olney, they now have a higher payroll than the Yankees, heh.

Wish list: Pettitte, Webb, Fuentes, Soriano. 'Cept the Yankees say they're not interested in Soriano, which I don't understand why.

Will, I wouldn't include Betances. If Liriano had proven himself healthy in recent years, I'd reconsider.

At 3:02 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

I agree that Montero is being positioned as a trade chip, but I doubt Cashman pulls the trigger unless a sure-fire ace under 30 is available.

And please, Brian, don't sign a LOOGY like Feliciano. Relievers that can't get both righties and lefties out are a waste of a roster spot.

At 7:13 PM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

Martin is just there to take pressure off of Montero. He's past the trade chip phase.

At 10:06 PM, Blogger MikeK said...

Phil, I'll believe that when Montero is a mainstay in the Yankees' lineup. But it doesn't look like any top-tier starters are available, so maybe you're right.

At 3:59 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cashman should go after Fuentes rather than Feliciano.

Soriano is a pipedream so people should forget it.

Pettite should be making a decision soon and I hope by the end of next week.

At 7:27 AM, Blogger MikeK said...

Feliciano is an awful signing. He can't get righties out, and Fuentes was a much better fit. You can't blame Cashman for Lee wanting to pitch in Philly, but he'll be judged on the moves he makes with more money free, and so far it's a wash at best.

At 9:14 AM, Blogger Kalel9 said...

He's wise not to spend just for the sake of spending.
