Draft Month
One of the great things about June, aside from the weather, is that MLB, the NHL and the NBA all hold their drafts in June. We'll keep track off all of them here.
MLB is first and runs from June 7th-June 9th. The Yanks will have 50 picks this year, having lost none through FA signings, nor gained any through FA losses. Once again, they will be looking for hitters with patience and pop and pitchers who strike people out. As always, they will probably take a high upside catcher at some point. Beyond that, they will probably load up on shortstops on the positional side. I expect them to rock right along with their pitching program.
The NBA draft is next on June 24. The Knicks don't have a first rounder at this point, but it will be worth watching because, they can always buy one and with 2 2nd rounders, might be inclined to move up for a specific target. It's all about feathering the bed for LeBron and hopefully being able to run the system D'Antoni ran in Phoenix.
The NHL draft goes last, from June 25 - June 26. It's unbelievable that the Sather is still there after 10 years of mediocrity and worse, but he is. Thankfully, he's not terribly interested in the draft and that has allowed Gord Clark and the scouts to do a pretty good job over the last couple of years. Unfortunately, due to a couple of trades, the Rangers will be without a 3rd and a 6th to start, but unlike the baseball draft, they can trade during the draft, so let's see what they do. They need SCORING and have the 10th overall pick. They should be able to get some good players.
So buckle up and enjoy draft month.
