Ugh

There's a report that the Yanks are offering Melky Cabrera for Pirate lefy reliever Mike Gonzalez. Gonzalez is talented but I wouldn't do this deal. Melky at 22 is our best defensive OF, and was impressive in putting up and OPS plus of 100 at 21. Cano's was 102 as a 23 year old rookie. I'm not assuming a second year jump like Cano showed, but I think Melky has good upside. The new Yankee hitting coach, Kevin Long, is apparently a big time proponent of getting the lower body into a player's swing. That will help Melky who did too much arm swinging as a rook. Anyway, you don't trade a kid like Melky for a non-closer. If you're set on trading him, and willing to bet on the health of Matsui, Damon and Abreu this year, you trade Melky in a deal for a starter - either a pitcher or a positon player, but not a set-up guy. The Yanks have extra-pitching and that's what should be used to get what would now be an extra pitcher.

If Cashman makes this trade, a less than stellar off season becomes a bad one, and the tenuous confidence I have in him will continue to plummet.

I will probably begin to hope that he will be fired.

I thought you liked the offseason he's been having. I'd be unhappy with this trade but would then spend a lot of time praying Gonzalez stays healthy.

Those comments were an attempt to make the best of a situation that I have no control over.

I didn't want to give Mussina two years.

I still think he badly underbid for Matsuzaka and badly overbid for Igawa.

I like the Sheffield trade, but that's not sufficient for Cashman to have my support.

I want to build from within. If Cashman doesn't share that goal, my opinion of him will continue to decline.

I was glad to get Mussina for 2 years at 11M.

I don't think anyone in baseball, Japan or America thought the bidding for Matsuzaka would hit the fifties. I don't fault us for losing a blind bid. We still have Hughes and Sanchez waiting in the wings.

And I think Cashmoney Green really doesn believe in the system. As a matter of fact, if this deal goes through - homegrown Bernie will be back;)

Bernie's possible return is the most compelling reason not to make the trade.

Yup, that scares the crap out of me.

Um, take a look at the Beckett trade...

It's just dumb. At least one of the current OFers will likely decline in the next year or two, and it would almost force them to extend Abreu at ridiculous money. His aversion to walls could get old really quickly. Matsui may never dive for a ball again.

I just don't want Bernie out there, and all of the 30-somethings will need time off.

I wouldn't mind Bernie back for a right hander off the bench and an occassional DH against lefthanders but we all know that if he is on the team that Torre will play him way too much.
