Koong Fu Must See's!
The 5 Fingers of Death AKA King Boxer (Shaw Brothers, 1972)! This flick helped kick off the Kung Fu craze of the early `70's. It features just about everything you could want from a Kung Fu flick: vengeance, multiple bad guys, training sequences, secret techniques, envy - everything! Except a leading man who could really sell the Kung Fu. Don't get me wrong, Lo Lieh was a great actor as he proved over and over again, but the American standard was Bruce Lee, and guys like Lo Lieh and David Chiang couldn't really sell the fights like Lee and the real athletes could. That said, this is still a must see. Suspend your Bruce Lee bias and get into the story. Of course, Lee wouldn't have had to be so good had he mastered the Iron Fist (Marvel clearly got their Iron Fist idea from this one) that Lo Lieh does in this movie. Kill Bill fans will notice that the Ironside theme was first used here to represent the hero's inner rage. It simply rocks, so dig it.

I just finished wathing 'Zatoichi: The Blind Swordsman' ( 1989 ). Does this movie fit into the bigger picture of it all?
Im not really sure I got the jist of the movie...What am I missing?
Very few fight scenes but some good ones near the end...It seemed more of a story.
I liked it...
I have a bunch of the original Zatoichi flicks and both they and The Lone Wolf and Cub series will be discussed here at some point.
The Zatoichi flicks, about the blind swordsman/massuer were pretty big in Japan in the `60's. I don't like the one from `89 as much. Try to check out one called Zatoichi and the Chess Master if you see it at the video store.
