My Favorite Comic Book Covers
The Shadow #1 by Mike Kaluta. See? I had DC comics, too! This is not only one of my favorite covers, but this is also my opportunity to complain that this book was cancelled way too soon! And the should have kept Kaluta and writer Denny O'Neill on it longer! It was a great mag! Bastards!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway, Kaluta was one of a group of really great artist who appeared in the `70's and threatened to really do some amazing things. Mike, who was apparently from Guatemala, was as great as this cover looks. He did the Shadow and also used to do DC's Carson of Venus stories in the Tarzan 100 pagers. His stuff seemed to be heavily influenced by Alex Raymond and the pulp cover art of the `30's and `40's. He only drew 4 Shadows, and I really, really wish there had been more. They knew what evil lurked in the hearts of men.
