More Yanks
Not much cooking, though, apparently Wes Helms would rather play 3rd for Philly than 1st for the Yanks. That brings us to the persistent rumor that the Yanks are about to give a multi-year deal to type A free agent Rich Aurilia, who's 35. Aurilia is coming off his first 800+ OPS season since 2001. I don't think we can expect him to be more consistently productive in his late 30's than he was in his early thirties and I'd have to look at his 2006 as a fluke. Now, he can back up 3 infield positions, BUT he would cost us our First Round Draft pick. As a result, I just don't think he's worth it. Now the Yanks might think that losing the #30 won't mean much since they'll be getting a sandwich pick when Villone signs somewhere else - and he better. But it's still really unlikely that Aurilia will be worth years and the first rounder. Use it on Zito, but not on another mid-30's free agent.

If Cashman signs Aurilia, my opinion of him will continue to sink.
From NJ.com:
Axelrod said the free-agent process has gone faster than he anticipated with Aurilia and indicated he could sign relatively soon.
"We've had conversations," Axelrod said of the Yankees, "and I would characterize it as sort of open-ended at this point.
Yeah, I wouldn't be too keen on that one. His age 35 year was way out of line for his career arc. I have no faith in his ability to put up an .800 ops again. And I really don't want to blow the first rounder on a non-pitcher. We'll get a sandwich pick if Villone gets signed somewhere else. Worst case scenario right now: sign Aurilia and re-sign Villone.
