The Yanks have signed 16 year old Venezuelan slugger Alberto Acosta. I don't know when I'll have a link for this, because when I googled him all the stuff was en Espanol. Needless to say, another high upside bat added to a very impressive 2006 prospect haul!

Baseball Notebook: Yankees and Mussina close to a new deal
01:00 AM EST on Wednesday, November 8, 2006
The Yankees are close to agreeing to a new contract with starter Mike Mussina.
Though the Yankees will decline Mussina's $17-million option for 2007, they want to retain him and he wants to stay. Talks have progressed on a new deal that probably will be for two years and $21 million to $23 million.
General manager Brian Cashman did not return a call seeking comment, and Mussina's agent, Arn Tellem, did not respond to an e-mail message.
Yeah, we've known this since the weekend. Remember, it will be that plus the 1.5M buyout. Things are lining up nicely for the offseason, but they sort of have to win the Matsuzak Lottery tomorrow, because plan B is looking like Clemens and Pettitte.
As I've said, I wouldn't guarantee a second year for Mussina (but my opinion doesn't matter), and the only way I could endorse Plan B is if they each accept one year deals.
Hughes cannot be blocked for the entire 2007 season. To the contrary, he should be given the opportunity to make the rotation out of ST.
The one postive about signing older pitchers is that they won't block Hughes, Clippard, Joba etc. I wouldn't mind Clemens imparting his wisdom and the legal parts of his workout on the kids who will be coming up in the not too distant future. If Hughes is ready in April, that will be incredible, but I don't want to overload him early. I think Clemens is the only one of the older guys we can get on a one year deal, though, if Pettitte is serious about wanting to retire he might be willing to go year to year.
