More Yanks

Joba Chamberlain is electrifying Hawaii!!!!!

RHP Joba Chamberlain, West Oahu CaneFires (Hawaiian Winter League, Yankees)
For the few who have scouted the Hawaiian Winter League this year, we seem to have a consensus on one thing: Joba Chamberlain is the best pitcher from this side of the Pacific. On Sunday afternoon the former Cornhusker went five innings, allowing a run on three hits, but what really has scouts buzzing is his command and control (and yes, those are two different things). In this particular game, Chamberlain recorded five strikeouts without walking a batter. That's pretty much par for his particular course: in seven appearances on the year, he's struck out at least a batter per inning five times, and he's not walked a batter in five games. The net result has been 35 strikeouts and just three walks in 28.2 innings. With two plus pitches (fastball and slider) and a classic power pitcher's frame, Chamberlain will likely begin 2007 at High-A Tampa, but he's expected to move up quickly.

He has a quality curve and developing change to go with his two plus pitches. His fastball has been in the 93-97 range and has topped out at 98 and 99(this number comes from Yankee exec Mark Newman) during his stay in Hawaii. He's not a teenager like Hughes, Garcia and Marquez were or Betances and McAllister are, and he could actually move fast from High A next year.

If you had to name a current pitcher in MLB who Chamberlain reminds you of, who would it be?

From reading that excerpt, he almost sounds like a young Mussina.

he throws much harder than Mussina did. If it was an arch type you want, I'd says he's a Clemens type before Clemens learned the split. Now, gentle readers, I am not saying his upside is Clemens, I'm just saying he is from that family of power pitchers.

You're right, but I really referring to his superb command.

The command has been exceptional in Hawaii, and apparently that is the product of some mechanical changes the Yanks have been working on with him. We could call him Seaver-ish, if that would cover the command issue. Though he as a plus slider and only a quality curve, while Seaver had a great hook.
