Draft Proviso

The Bro. Okay, this year, the Yanks didn't seem to pop as many signability guys until the latest rounds where they are making it a bit of a tradition to take kids to honor them, rather than to sign them.  Anyway, at the top of the draft, the Yanks went Prep, JuCo, Prep, and people are now concerned that the Prep they took in Round 3, Ryder Green, has such a big number they will have to spend anything they saved anywhere else in the first 10 rounds on Ryder Green.

If that is so, why didn't they take Ryder Green in the second round?  Pick 61 has a bigger slot value (1, 086,900) than the Pick 97 (576,400).  In other words, why not take him where there'd be less to make up via other savings? Why not maximize the help thay can get from the slot value?

I guess, it might have been that the Yanks, saw a chance to get 3 big bats, and felt that Bro, with whatever his price tag is wouldn't be there in 3 if they took Green 2nd.

It's a little perplexing.  And we may not be able to tell till the deadline.

And of course there is a possibility that both Breaux and Green were overslots, though "experts" would have us believe Breaux was a reach, they don't have the network of scouts and analytic support system the Yanks have.  Arkansas wanted Breaux as a C, not a DH, so his catching must be coming along fast and furious.  And if they saw it so did the Yanks.

If Green hired an adviser (agent) then he will lose his eligibility for College ball. There were rumors that he did in fact hire one. So my take is he's signing.

OT, but it would be very forward and outside the box thinking to sell high on Didi now instead of committing major money to a player who will probably never learn to control the strike zone.

All ten rounds are signing. The Yanks would never risk losing a slot value under the current formula.

In an alarming announcement, the Angels revealed today that right-hander Shohei Ohtani has been placed on the 10-day DL with a Grade 2 sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. He’s already received a platelet-rich plasma injection, per the Angels, and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

It’s easy for me to say but I wish Tanaka had TJ surgery

Would have precluded our chance of getting under the threshold most likely.

This year, but has been going on for like three.

Anyway, he’s batting eighth.

NYP

Tanaka reached on a one-out error in the Yankees’ half of the sixth and came around to score on Aaron Judge’s sacrifice fly that tied the game at 1-1. But Tanaka took an awkward step as he ran toward home and then adjusted his stride to avoid the tag at the plate by Devin Mesoraco.

The more I think about it, the more I think they'd be better off holding onto the Fraziers and Sheffields of the system and let those pieces help the big-league club themselves. There just isn't going to be anything worthwhile available to part with those chips.

Yes, the contributions of young players are their strength so why mess with it? Conversely, Gray has pitched mostly better lately, but it has been such an ordeal often with really low bars as success and having to throw to only one catcher. The primary reasons that isn’t more of an issue is that Sanchez has had an inexplicably poor season and Romaine has been unpredictably good. If their respective offensive contributions were as envisioned it would be completely intolerable.

Having said that, I expect a trade and expect not to like it.

Should Nevin have sent Tanaka? It’s a close call imo.

From Matthews:

A Yankees source told me the club has a similar policy (to David Wright’s) on Ellsbury, which has already begun to defray the bulk of his salary for the first two months of 2018. In an ideal world, Ellsbury would sit out the remainder of the season, the Yankees would muddle through with a rotation of Gardner, Hicks and Frazier in centerfield – and be reimbursed to the tune of $15,857,142.86.

It’s important to note the insurance does not change anything with regards to the luxury tax. Ellsbury still counts as $21.85M against the luxury tax. Nothing changes there. The insurance policy just means the Yankees get some cold hard cash back for Ellsbury’s injuries. I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I don’t think Ellsbury and the Yankees have a secret agreement to stay on the disabled list — that’s insurance fraud! — but the insurance sure is convenient, isn’t it?
