This Week on the Blog
I was going to write this earlier today, but the first bit of news I saw was the story about Jay Bromley, and, thus decided to put the regular article aside for the time being. Meanwhile, I have nothing to say about Bromley. No judgment to make, and nothing to write about. So onto our usual four.
Giants: The Giants will probably introduce their new coaching staff this week, and McAdoo may or may not have finished his film review of last season. I suppose some cuts and negotiations are on the way ahead of free agency in March. Of course, four of them are playing in the Pro Bowl tomorrow and let's hope they make it out alright. The FO must also be at work on both their FA Board and Draft Board. The Giants have a mind numbing number of roster needs, but also a ton of cap room and the ability to make more.
Knicks: The Knicks have to start the week against the Warriors tomorrow night, then things will, necessarily get easier. You have to like the effort they are giving almost every night, and a run is still not out of the question. What's in the question is whether or not they'll make moves at the deadline, or whether they'll keep their powder dry for the offseason.
Rangers: the Rangers are on their all-star break till Tuesday, and they're another team that has to decide what to do at the deadline. They're still capped up tight and must look at selling or selling while buying. They need to keep playing better. It was nice to see Miller, McDonagh and Kreider starting to come alive before the break. Zucc needed the help, and Hayes was playing better, too.
Yanks: We're going to get a bunch of ARod the mentor stories. And you know what, I bless him for that. And I believe he's really into it. The prospects have largely returned to Tampa and their supervised works out by now and it's just 18 days till pitchers and catchers report. Of course, things can happen in February - like ARod 12 years ago - so stay vigilant.
I'll try to get more posts done this week, but I've been distracted by a few situations. I hope each of you has a great one.

Bird...torn labrum...shoulder surgery...F##K
Ughhhhhhhhhh noooooo Speedy recovery Bird
There are a lot of ways this can sort itself out.
For example, Teix can stay healthy. In that case would they give him a QO?
If he goes down, McCann can play 1B and Sanchez could catch more, or the reverse could happen.
Headley could play 1B, Castro can play 3B, and Refs can play 2B.
Or, Ackley could play 1B.
The problem is that both Ackley and Headley would have hit a lot more than they have in recent seasons to be true 1B bats.
UGHH unreal. I guess if there's a silver lining, this is the year for him to be hurt since we really don't have any room for him on the roster but this sucks.
What a shame. I hope he comes all the way back. Meanwhile, it presents an opportunity for Refs and Sanchez to show what they can do over a sustained period of time and establish places for themselves in 2017.
Sucks, especially when you consider Teix will very likely get hurt at some point this year.
Murti: Bird suffered initial injury last May, labrum tear. Rest/rehab only then. Changes in MRI now led to surgery recommendation.
Of course.
I don't know whether their doctors are any good, but there is little doubt that medicine is less of an exact science than it is sold to be at times.
Buster Olney reported there’s still at least some possibility he could be play by the end of the year. LH
Went on an extra long walk right after I got the news. Damn.
I'm well past the age when I can get into fights for stupid reasons, but if I hear anymore Greg Bird is Nick Johnson comparisons I'm gonna lose it.
The more I think about it, the less I would be willing to give to Teix a qualifying offer unless he just blows it away for 155 games.
Prior to Bird's emergence it was said that McCann could transition to first base and Sanchez good catch. Why not go that route, and if Bird is fine, you're loaded; if not, your lineup is set.
I think you give him the qo iff you're absolutely sure he won't take it, which is probably what LINJ is suggesting. This year's results make that look very unlikely, however.
Yes, basically. There's some reports that Bird could make it back by September if not late August, and given the uncertainty with Teix's contract situation, that could be pretty important.
Refs can do what Uribe could do.
Playing Vujacic always leads to shit outcomes.
Diehl: Gettleman has built Carolina from the inside out.
Too bad Reese hadn't done that.
There is no way the Knicks are giving any effort right now
Kaprelian, Mateo and Judge are non-roster invitees to spring training.
Lail and Fowler, too.
We need some positive from Yankees. Every other New York sports teams are shitting bricks.
Affalo...
He's a selfish player.
Cut Geoff sign Mitchell.
Fisher fired. Rambis interim.
I doubt they go after Thibs. I wonder if Luke Walton is the play?
So glad they finally made this move, Fisher even for a 2nd year coach has been bad.
It's sad how bad he was
Some jerks on Twitter thing this was a Dolan move. We should be embarrassed for their own stupidity
Lawyer got his wish 😊
Reasonable people can differ on Cashman and Reese, but Fisher was completely incompetent and overmatched.
New Thread.
The Gourriel brothers defected from Cuba. Moot point, I know, since the Yankees are allergic to signing Cubans, but I would take Yuleski over Headley at third all day.
Well, they recently traded for one, so maybe this will work out.
The younger Gourriel would have to wait a few months in order to turn 23 and not be subject to the amateur IFA restrictions.
Seriously, some one convince me Yuleski wouldn't be better than Headley right now?
Yulieski Gourriel and his younger brother, Lourdes, were said to have defected from Cuba in several reports. Before exiting, Yulieski generally was viewed as the best player left in Cuba — a middle-of-the-order mainstay for years for the national team.
It could be months until either signs, but Yulieski could affect a pennant race this year for a club that needs a second baseman or third baseman, perhaps even the Yankees. Brian Cashman would not speak about either brother. But an official from an opposing team said the Yankees’ international scouting director, Donny Rowland, has long liked Yulieski.
They've been going by Gurriel for the last few years. I think we'll go after them.

My bad on the spelling of the names. If Headley stinks, which I suspect he will, you have to at least strongly consider it. But this is the Yankees, and they hate Cubans for some reason, so forget about it.
Sherman:
The Yankees would never publicly admit it, but they are playing the long game trying to clean up their payroll, reduce the age on their roster and build up their athleticism and depth. The willingness to take on the controversy and potential suspension that came with acquiring Aroldis Chapman while he still had domestic abuse allegations lingering over him shows the Yankees want to have some shot to win it all, should things break right.
--
This makes little sense. Only years ago they wasted hundreds of millions; last year it was Headley, and this year they take on four years of Castro.
So the idea that are trying to clean up payroll is illusory.
Headley is the only real head-scratcher in that regard, as Castro fits the "young and athletic" bill. He's definitely an overpay, but he's not immovable like the ones from several years ago.
They would be just about right where they should be if they hadn't given up the 3 firsts two years ago.
For Mike:

I actually think it's um, fair and balanced.
My primary concern with regard to their spending is, as I have said, that they only spend really big when money comes off the books, and then they spend it no matter what. That's a prescription for the bloated, inflexible roster that they currently field.
It may merely be the glow of ST, but I am cautiously optimistic about this team as long as Joey takes the very long view with every fragile player, especially Ellbsury and Gardner.
I continue to be shocked at how much the seemingly typical NYY fan loves Girardi. It's perplexing.

New article up about the Giants.
Thoughts?

Yes, a hitter should be mindful of pitching trends, but the overriding factor, I think, is a knowledge of the strike zone, as well as having the contact skills to be able to utilize that knowledge. When a hitter has that, he can adjust to any trend
Ike Davis would epitomize the Yankees under Cashman.
There he goes again:
Our starting rotation’s health is really the keys to the kingdom for us,” Cashman said Thursday evening at NYY Steakhouse in Midtown, where he appeared with rival Red Sox executive Dave Dombrowski, Boston’s president of baseball operations, for a fundraising event. “It normally is for anybody. I believe when we’re able to run out our healthy starting rotation that we have on paper, we can match up with anybody. It’s just maintaining health.”
Big if, unfortunately. BTW, I heard from a local JuCo baseball coach recently the Yankees aren't the only team who view pitching as the "keys to the kingdom," so to speak; a lot of teams supposedly feel you need guys that can shut down lineups. I still think you need guys who work counts and can hit to all fields myself.
Davis as a backup wouldn't really bother me.
If you can build the staff the way Alderson has, fine. Cashman has shown no ability to do that, and despite his protestations about not picking at the top of the draft like the Mets, Harvey was the only high pick. Alderson has done so well that they could lose Harvey and still have a great staff. But who won the World Series last year? The Royals, because they had good enough pitching and the kind of hitters who can adjust to any type of pitching. Just like the Yankee he's of the 90s! It seems that Cashman has forgotten that, and we know Joey isn't going to remind him.
Again, Yankees can be very good if they need a lot of things to go right.
As for Davis, I would rather give Ackley more playing time. He would seem to have far more upside at this point.
It's more an issue of them needing bodies due to Teix's inevitable DL stint.
I agree you need both hitting and pitching, and I do feel the Yankees undervalue the former lately.
Yes, I just heard that he would be for AAA. I wish they had a prospect behind Bird.
Mejia received a permanent ban from MLB due to PEDs. Wow.
