Yankee Pitching Stuff

It seems like a lot of people want the Yanks to get one of the "big" free agent pitchers among Lester, Shields and Scherzer, and of course all of them are over thirty and will require 4 or more years.   McCarthy would probably give them the best bang for the buck, as he might be less in dollars and years.

And of course, they really should re-sign Robertson.  He's basically everything a Yankee reliever is supposed to be and he's a stand up guy.  Perfect to play Mo to the loads of young pitchers that will be coming through over the next year and teach them how to be Yankee tough.  We need more guys like DRob, not less.

LINJ,

I won't argue that Cashman has been unable to maximize the roster under the current demands of ownership. Where I fault ownership is that they won't hire someone else that potentially could, or change the mandate and give Cashman room to shift organizational philosophy from pretend to contend to team-building.

Stating publicly that he wants a player doesn't mean much to me, because if I were a GM I could say I wanted David Price but behind the scenes could have been unwilling to gut my farm system to get him. (Being purely hypothetical here.)

I blame him for extending CC after the opt-out. I don't blame him at all for Teixeira because he was 28 when they signed him, and it was a seven-year deal. No reason in the world to think he would have declined so considerably when that deal was made.

I say all this to say, the Steinbrenners are the ones who continue to employ Cashman. It falls on them to either get rid of him or give him room to go in a different direction when the current one isn't working.

I don't want McCarthy either. He is too fragile on a staff that is dangerously fragile as is. That makes him a bad fit. Unless he takes a one year deal, of course...

Mike

Let's put aside the abysmal record of development under his tenure, even though I think it's a damning indictment.

What core position players has he added during his tenure? Cano, to be sure, and A-Rod because he took on salary, but that was about a decade ago.

Gardner is ok, but he's not core. Maybe Ellsbury will, but that's a really scary contract for his typical season production.

Since 2004-05, nothing. To me, that summarizes his failed record.

The Cardinals get value from all parts of the draft and free agency spending far less.

The owners aren't going anywhere. The same shouldn't be true of an under-performing employee, who by the way, hired this anal-retentive manager, who isn't adding value either.

And not that it's earth shattering either way, but Ibanez? Really? Feast or famine personified.

That sounds like a compromise candidate who won't offend or infringe on turf.

As for saying he wants x pitchers, he was very explicit with his rock n' roll nonsense, and somehow he is never so explicit about hitters.

He doesn't understand the importance of young, dynamic offensive players based on his record.

When Judge and Refs and Murphy and Jagielo are ensconced as Yankee starters and doing well, I will happily say that the failure transformed into success.

But I need to see real evidence to change my mind, just as the failure to see the same for so long made me realize that I was wrong about him and it was time for fresh eyes.

I left out Sanchez. If he becomes a star here, I would be really, really, really happy.

Luis Torrens may even be better than Sanchez, though I think Sanchez is gonna be a better MLB player than a MiLB player because those home parks are killing him.

Good, that's another opportunity to turn this thing around.

Someone out there who loses out on Lester or the other big guns is going to offer McCarthy 4 years, at $12 or more per. I hope that team is not the Yankees.

Yeah, I'd just as soon let Bryan Mitchell and Tracey or whoever hold the fort or establish themselves why we wait for Severino et al.

I would tender and resign DRob and tender Kuroda. If McCarthy will take a two-year deal, I wouldn't be too upset even if we overpaid him a bit. All of this doesn't cost us any draft picks and gives us a year to see if Banuelos/Severino are ML ready.

First priority has to be fixing the offense. If after doing that there's room for McCarthy they can consider it but I would not let someone so fragile disrupt something far more important.

Lawyer,

No question, that's an abysmal record of development since he gained supposed autonomy in 2006. It's up to Cashman to find people that can implement a system like the Cardinals do that allows them to truly compete every year, even if they aren't getting high draft picks. (Unless the Steinbrenner's relent on pretend to contend, which I don't see happening.) Let's hope the latest changes lead to a turnaround.

"The same shouldn't be true of an under-performing employee, who by the way, hired this anal-retentive manager, who isn't adding value either."

But again, that falls back on ownership.

I personally believe what you do is far more important than what you say. (A reality lost upon our socio-political culture, but that's an entirely different debate altogether.) He certainly wasn't shy about the fact that the offense needed upgrading at the deadline. Let's see what the offseason brings in that regard.

I should add, Ibanez would be a very underwhelming hire if it were to happen.

What I'm waiting to see are the results of their minor league audit. Those will the the most portentous tells of the coming years. I like that it's taking time, but wish we had some info because I think it's a huge opportunity to set things up right.

I'm neutral on any Ibanez hire because he has no record as a coach good or bad, but is said to have been a great influence on young players where he has gone.

Hope we can keep our draft picks and continue stocking the farm. Forget free agents that would take our draft picks.

Lester wont cost a draft pick.

The only reason to sign Lester is if they: 1) are willing to take the payroll to a significantly higher level and keep it there until and unless they finally learn to develop from within; and 2) can accept the strong possibility that the offense will be bad for two more years unless several old players rediscover their lost skills.

If they are truly serious about the win-now thing, Lester is a hedge against Tanaka and Pineda's fragility, and if they are going to compete at a high level, it probably has to be with truly great pitching.

It's not what I would do, but it may fit their purported "business" model.
