Yanks Save the Crown Jewels At the Deadline, But---

Okay, the deadline has passed and Severino, Clarkin, Judge, Jags, Bird, Cave and others are still Yankees.   They did however trade Peter O'Brien for Martin Prado.    Prado is having a subpar year against RHP, but he is defensively versatile for a team that is defensively terrible.    They are taking on his full deal which is 2 more years at 11M a pop.   That's a salary dump, ladies.   And when you take on a salary dump, even if the guy still has value, you don't trade assets  that should be saved for a non-salary dump type of deal.  Peter O'Brien was that kind of asset.   Sure there are holes in his swing but he was starting to tame it a bit lately, and his power is prodigious, in an era where it's hard to find.  Thus he should have gone in a trade with other parts for a young core player.  Not a utility guy making 11M per annum.   That said, I saw no future for him as a Yank and I do despise low OBP players.    I can't call a guy Shelley Duncan II, and then carp too much when he gets traded for anything.   Still, they probably should have held on a bit longer.

That said, the bigger picture is that the crown jewels were saved, and that's great news.  I will start doing the positional analysis as soon as I rest up.

UPDATE: And the Yankees also DFA'd Roberts and Sizemore.

Before the deadline, they were looking at holes next year at 2B, SS, 3B, and maybe RF.

They have done nothing to fill any of them.

They could have begun to break-in Refs at 2B. They declined.

They took on too much salary and got nothing accomplished going forward.

Yes, they didn't trade their best prospects, but given how they do business, they aren't going to be patient enough to endure the learning curve with all of them.

They aren't nearly as good as the Tigers or A's, so really, what is the point of pretending?

Roberts DFA'd, but for the wrong reason.

Prado will fill in one of those holes.

Book it.

Which one? He doesn't hit enough to fill any position he plays but 2B, and if they let him block Refs, they are nuts.

Prado can play all of those positions. Albeit, one at a time, but they didn't do nothing.

And the infield that features Prado and Drew is defensively better than any feature Kelly and Roberts.

Prado can't hit enough to play 3B or the OF going forward as a starter given the lack of power on this team.

He can if we are rebuilding and not on a blind crusade to fill the stadium for a few playoff dates every year. I'm comfortable with watching kids come up and keeping our picks for awhile while we really build a new power house.

Look at his OPS+ over the years:

2010: 119
2011: 87
2012: 114
2013: 105
2014: 91

That is troubling for $11m per.

Sure, we are comfortable watching kids, but they weren't even willing to trust Refs. That is a concern to me.

And just to clarify for the defenders of the GM: this type of move comes from the direction of Levine/Hal. They never take a step back, fans. They can win the WS every single year forever!

I did already look at his OPS+ over the years and realize it's erratic. Don't love the trade or his money, but, at the same time, I like his versatility while we break in kids going forward.

And hopefully, we'll still get Castillo and that's why we didn't pull the trigger on an OF bat today.

I think Refs being kept down is for a couple of reasons. One, he needs more time learning to defend his position (2B). Second, Refs does not need to be protected this year on the 40 man roster(unless they call him up), so they can protect another young player. This is a good thing.

This season is a wash anyway. How can we compete with Detroit/Oakland with 80% of our starting rotation out. No team can overcome that ..

You can't compete; they're 5 games under without Tanaka, that's why they should sell.

As for Refs, if he isn't ready at 2B, why give him time in the OF.

As for the 40 man, if it's a problem, why give a declining Prado a spot?

There is very little coherence.

I think they were giving him time in the OF to see if he could be ready to play it. Now they'll hopefully let him get his pivots down and take the job next year for a few years,

We have more coming, btw.

I'm OK with the moves in and of themselves, but LINJ has a point here: The Yankees have officially entered Sports Purgatory. That's what's being missed by the casual fan.

If we can gets Castillo we will have added a ton of international talent this month, as well as major league patches and really only lost DePaula and O''Brien, who were both star crossed and either had been passed or were about to be,

Plus, believe it or not, even with a reduced pool, we managed to get some players in the draft, last month.

The system is intact and developing.

You could destroy Rob by having him learn his position at the MLB level.IMO stop putting him in RF and let him progress at SWB

And that is what the Yankees intend to do. Refsnyder at 2B for the rest of 2014.
