Yankees Draft: What Now?

Okay, so the Yankees really weird draft is over.  We'll get into how weird it was over the next few days, but what happens?  The players who are ready to sign right away will head down to Tampa, get physicals, and sign right away.  They'll then be assigned to a short season team.   The other players will either hold out for more, decide they don't want to sign, or agree to play a little more before the Yanks either give them their number or don't.   They call that summer draft and follow, but it's literally just a 4 or 5 week turnaround.

The Yanks will also try to sign some players who weren't drafted.  That's how they got Mike Ford last year.

In the next few days, you'll also probably see former draft picks or highly touted IFA signings get released.   It's the bittersweet flip side of bringing in a big new class.

So there's lots of paperwork, some haggling and probably not enough playing going on for the next week or so.   Some of the haggling could last till the deadline.

They have to sign all 9 of their top 10 round picks or they lose the slot money. They wouldn't take a pick they couldn't sign.
